Age no bar for them

Chandigarh, March 30
Age is no deterrence for these two determined brothers who have been minting gold in veteran athletics meets.

Meet local master athletes Gurjiwan Sidhu and his younger brother Pargat Singh Sidhu. Gurjiwan, who is an advocate in the Punjab and Haryana High Court is 75 years old while Pargat is 62.

In the XXXVII Punjab Masters Athletics Championship held last week at the Guru Gobind Singh Stadium, Muktsar, the brothers set a rare example by winning five medals. Gurjiwan clinched gold medals in discuss throw, hammer throw and shot put in the 75+ category whereas Pargat bagged one gold and one bronze in hammer and discuss throw, respectively, in the 60+ category.

This is not the first time that Gurjiwan has brought glory to the state with his achievements. He clinched the gold in shot put in the 14th Asian Masters’ Athletic Championship last year at Bangalore. Gurjiwan was national champion (masters) in shot put for three years from 2004 to 2006.

The enthusiast Sidhu brothers have been preparing for the Asian Championship which is likely to be held in Japan in 2008 and the World Meet scheduled to be held in Italy in July this year.

However, the master athletes have some grudge against the local administration as well as the state government. “Despite winning top honours in several national and international events, we never get any recognition or financial help from the government. But we will continue to bring honour to the state”, said the Sidhu brothers.
