Koirala to announce interim govt today

Nepalese Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and top-brass leaders of the Maoists and seven-party alliance (SPA) on Friday reached an agreement to announce a 26-member cabinet on Saturday. They have also agreed to hold a constituent assembly election by the third week of June.

According to Bimalendra Nidhi, general secretary of Nepali Congress-Democratic (NC-D), premier Koirala would tender his resignation in the Interim Parliament by dissolving his cabinet tomorrow and speaker Subas Nembang would endorse it from the House.

“Immediately, the House will choose Koirala for the post of the Prime Minister of the interim government,” he said, adding, “Then Koirala will take the oath of the office from the House and announce the names of the cabinet members”. On Friday evening, premier and Nepali Congress President Koirala held a series of meetings with CPN-UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal and Maoists chairperson Prachanda and reached an understanding to share five ministries for the Congress, the UML and the Maoist. Similarly, they have also agreed to give three ministries for the NC-D and each ministry for other three small political parties in the SPA.

According to a source, the Maoist will lead five ministries, including information and communication. Maoist spokesperson Krishna Bahadur Mahara will lead his party in the interim government as a minister of information and communication along with other leaders, Dev Gurung, Hisila Yami, wife of Maoist second leader Dr Baburam Bhattarai, Matrika Yadav and Khadga Bahadur Biswakarma, alias Prakanda.
