Christians top list of unemployed: Survey

New Delhi, March 31
A fresh bout of political controversy is bound to happen on who are the most backward religious communities in India as the latest National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) survey contradicts the Justice Rajinder Sachar Committee’s findings that Muslims are the most backward, particularly when it comes to employment opportunities.

According to NSSO data on ‘employment and unemployment situation among major religious groups in India’, Christians are the most educated religious community and top the list of the unemployed in the country.

The NSSO survey for 2004-05 says that in urban areas more than 8 per cent of Christians are unemployed. The corresponding figure for Hindus is 4.4 per cent and for Muslims it’s 4.1 per cent.
