Debt-ridden farmer kills himself in Barnala
Kamlesh Sharma

Barnala, April 9
The saga of endless worries of farmer Harjit Singh came to a tragic end when he consumed poison here yesterday. Having been found unconscious in the grain market last evening, he was rushed to a hospital at Mehal Kalan where he was declared dead.

A resident of Khyali village, Harjit Singh (42), is survived by his wife and two children. The post mortem was conducted at civil hospital here and the viscera has been sent for chemical examination.

Harjit Singh originally belonged to Bhamia village near Ludhiana. About 10 years back, he settled down at Khyali after purchasing 5 acres and took a loan for purchasing a tractor.

When he could not pull along, the debt increased manifold and Harjit had to sell the tractor at a throwaway price and subsequently the land.

Later, he purchased a four-wheeler on loan but again failed in his endeavour and ultimately the vehicle, too, had to be sold.

Leading a life in penury, Harjit’s condition was so miserable that he was unable to admit his wards in school. This upset him the most and he opted to end his life. On Sunday evening he told his wife that he was going out to arrange some money for the admission of their daughter and son. However, he was found lying unconscious in the grain market.

Local BKU leaders have demanded a compensation of Rs 5 lakh from the state government for the aggrieved family.
