Q
I am a BA-III student. I have a piece of land on which I would like to grow flowers. Should I go for some courses? Am I eligible for them? Can you please suggest me some courses that would equip me with the necessary knowledge? Are there any in Chandigarh or Himachal Pradesh? Also, please guide me with some names of books or websites that would solve my problems regarding infrastructure, species of flowers buyers. — Kitu Vashist It is easier if you have some land of your own. Otherwise you need a minimum of one acre to begin with. However, before setting foot in this field you must undertake a proper assessment of various factors such as soil quality, availability of usable ground water, climate and proximity to the market. You must explore the marketing possibilities so that you get the best price for your flowers and also select the most suitable flowers for cultivation. If you are creative and enterprising enough to study the seasonal demand vs. availability of various flowers in the international market, and thereafter use it to your advantage, needless to say you could “reap a rich harvest”. Floriculture can be a lucrative business, if you have a green thumb and a smart business sense. A degree in floriculture would be ideal for getting started, though not necessary. A course in tissue culture will help you identify and propagate plants, which are adaptable to Indian conditions, as also try out new breeds of flowers. If you can’t attend a regular course, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Centre for Distance Education, Bijni Complex, Laitumkhrah, Shillong (www.nehu.ac.in) offers a 6-month certificate course in floriculture besides a General Course in Floriculture (6-month, Distance). Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree. Your training should equip you to set up and maintain a green house and handle green house equipment, cultivation techniques, post harvest treatment, storage, packaging etc. Speak to some flower growers in your area. There are plenty of them between Chandigarh and Solan itself. You can also contact your local Horticulture Department or Agriculture University e.g. Ch. Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya Palampur, Distt Kangra (HP) (www.hillagric.org) or Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana-141 004 (www.pau.edu) . Or else, just make sure, you have expert technical advice so that you don’t fall short of quality at any stage. Remember freshness and timing are critical issues in this business. If you are interested in commercial horticulture can also visit the website of the National Horticulture Board (hortibizindia.org) for information on subsidies and support schemes. Laws of success
Q
Can you please tell me something about pursuing LL.M in the US? — Ritesh Bhansali However, some LL.M students, especially international students, have found a short-term position (6-12 months) in a non-academic employment setting to be beneficial to their ultimate career goals. A handful of students secure permanent positions with legal firms
in the US. The programmes can be individually tailored to suit your interests and normally require a thesis of publishable quality. Some LL.M programmes offer concentration in particular fields such as taxation, international law and comparative law, and may or may not require a thesis. For foreign-educated lawyers like you, some law schools offer LL.M programmes such as "US Comparative Law" or "US Legal
Studies", which are designed to give them an insight into the American legal system. LL.M programmes are typically 1-year long and do not normally require standardised tests such as the Law School Admission
Test (LSAT) or the GRE (www.gre.org) for admission. International applicants may
be required to take the TOEFL. The writer is a noted career consultant Please send in your query, preferably on a postcard, along with your full name, complete address and academic qualifications to: Editor, Jobs and Careers, The Tribune, Sector 29, Chandigarh-160030, or at careers@tribunemail.com
