Former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh today went to the 10 Janpath residence of Congress president Sonia Gandhi to meet her and convey his views on the case registered against him in the Ludhiana city centre controversy.
While the former Chief Minister did not speak to waiting mediapersons after coming out of her residence, the 10 Janpath was also tightlipped, with officials at Sonia's residence not confirming the meeting.
Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi, who is in charge of Punjab, said he had no information if the former Chief Minister had met Sonia Gandhi.
The former Chief Minister yesterday landed in the capital from London, where he had gone for medical reasons. He was given a welcome by party leaders from Punjab, who had come to Delhi to meet him.
The former Chief Minister is keen to apprise the party high command of the "political vendetta" launched against him by the Akali Dal-led government in Punjab.
Though Capt Amarinder Singh had said yesterday that he would meet Congress president "later" as she was busy with UP elections, he sought an early appointment.
Following speculation about his visit to Britain soon after the poll results, Capt Amarinder Singh had clarified that the visit was for medical reasons and he had informed Sonia Gandhi about it before the elections. Capt Amarinder was not present when Congress MLAs called on the Congress president last month.
Apparently keen for a role in the state, the former Chief Minister said yesterday that he would tour various districts in the state to revitalise the party.
Sources said that the party high command had sent signals that while the former Chief Minister would fight his legal battle, he will get the backing of the party in his political fight against the Akali Dal leadership.
