GMCH doc attends world congress
Chandigarh, April 11 He shared his experience there on the “Pattern of Cricket Injuries Treated Surgically at the GMCH”. Dr Gupta said that cricket injuries requiring surgery involved both upper and lower limbs. However, upper limb injury was more common. All studies in the world were mainly based on the data from first class cricket and about elite players. There were mainly three studies — one each from England, Australia and South Africa. Knowing the injury pattern in severe injuries requiring operative intervention was very important to devise special treatment and rehabilitation protocols for players so that they were able to play again in the minimum possible time, he said. Dr Gupta mentioned that the cricket injuries were more common in the players playing at the school, college or local club level. The main reason for injuries at these levels included lack of prescribed conditions of the ground and the safety equipment. Former West Indian cricket captain Clive Lloyd was the chief guest at the congress, which had been endorsed by the International Cricket Council. |

Brothers Sahib, Jaskaran selected for zonal academy
Chandigarh, April 11 As many as 24 cricketers have been selected for each group in the ZCA out of which 16 will be send to the NCA on the basis of their performance during their 40-day stint at the academy. After that, these cricketers will get an opportunity to represent the country at the international level. Both brothers represent Himachal Pradesh and have been honing their cricketing skills under the supervision of the coach Nagesh Gupta at St John’s Cricket Academy, Sector 26, here. Seventeen-year-old Jaskaran, who likes to send balls to the fence with his sweep shots and cover drives, attracted the attentions of cricket officials with his exceptional batting and wicket-keeping performance in the All-India Under-17 Inter-State tournament. He had led the Himachal team which finished third there. Putting up a marvellous show, Jaskaran made 419 runs including one century (110 runs) and three half centuries (98, 92 and 50 runs) and made over 30 victims behind the stumps. Jaskaran has been an integral part of the Himachal u-15 and u-17 for four years. His sibling Sahib has also been making waves with his fast bowling skills. He represented the state in the under-15 tournament where he claimed six wickets in his debut match against Delhi last year. In the tournament, he snapped a total of 14 wickets in four matches. This achievement paved the way for him to get selected in the under-17 team. Sahib, who is a student of St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, impressed selectors with his potential of bowling the ball at over 115 kmph. Elated over the achievements of his prodigies, Nagesh said, “This is a proud moment for the academy. Certainly, the duo will make a mark in the Indian team”. The ZCA camp for u-17 and u-19 will start at PCA, Mohali and Dharamsala, respectively, from April 20. |

‘City has great tennis potential’
Chandigarh, April 11 In town to conduct a week-long coaching camp at the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association Stadium in Sector 10 from April 9 to 15, Akhtar is highly impressed with the infrastructure the city offers for tennis. “Chandigarh has great potential to become a vibrant nursery for tennis in the country,” he said. “The reason for not finding champion material in the country is that there are hardly any prize money tournaments in our country. So, there is ‘lack of desire’ to play. Money is a must to make a game popular,” Akhtar said. “Players too lose interest and once they achieve a place in under-12 or under-14 level. They get satisfied when they get a job or scholarship,” he said. Similarly, programmes to groom players from poor backgrounds too need to be revamped. “Players from humble backgrounds have ‘white-skin complex’, as they get less exposure on overseas courts.” Akhtar has coached in Holland, USA, Australia, Czechoslovakia, Belgium and Malaysia and has a long list of distinguished trainees which includes the Amritraj brothers, Ramesh Krishnan, Narinder Singh, Gaurav Misra, Nandan Bal, Leander Paes and his son Zeeshan Ali. When asked if we needed foreign coaches to raise the level of Indian tennis, prompt came the reply in the negative. “Foreign coaches will not come to India at the money we offer them. In my opinion, we should find Indian coaches who can deliver.” |
