City doctors author book on drug reactions

Ludhiana, April 11
City based doctors-Dr Dinesh Badyal and Dr R.S. Bhatia-recently released a book on ‘Adverse Drug Reactions’ (ADR).

The book is meant for scholars, physicians and practitioners, who daily encounter drug adverse effects in the course of their practice.

The book, claimed the authors, was the first comprehensive compilation written on this subject. It would prove of immense use to those medical professionals, who cared for their patient.

Different adverse effects of drugs on various body systems have been comprehensively described in the book and a long list of drugs was provided, which were commonly suspected to cause such reactions.

According to Dr Bhatia, drugs, which were meant for giving comfort, might produce adverse effects due to idiosyncrasy, overdose or drug-to-drug interaction. Some of these reactions often proved fatal if the offending drug was strong enough due to genetic disposition.

“The book strongly urges for documentation registry of these reactions although national pharma-covigilance programme had been started by the government of India for comprehensive reporting and monitoring of adverse drug reactions. The drug reactions in hospitalised patients may vary from 21-31 per cent as compared to 2-6 per cent in outdoor patients in practice, but reporting is not more than 0.2 per cent.” he said.
