Admn notice to vacate SAI hostel
Chandigarh, April 16 After the Chandigarh administration had ordered that the premises be vacated before April 30, these sportspersons from all over the region had hoped that talks between the administration and SAI authorities would yield a positive result. But with the administration refusing to budge from its stand, SAI authorities have been left with no option but to ask the players to leave the premises. “The order was a jolt. We were hopeful that the administration would consider our problem sympathetically and allow us to remain here. We do not know what to do and where to go?” said a young player. At the centre, a total of 81 sportspersons including 50 hostellers and 31 day boarders were receiving training in four disciplines - hockey, athletics, basketball and volleyball. Apart from them, over 25 players from the surrounding area came daily to get training from the eight SAI coaches here. Most hostellers find themselves in a dilemma as they have no alternative arrangement to stay in the city. Neither has the administration provided any alternative site nor have SAI authorities made any arrangements till date. All these players are students of local schools. Interestingly, after uprooting this 19-year-old centre, which has produced 61 international and over 200 national players in the four disciplines, the administration wants to set up a sports academy for female hockey players. |
