City schools to accommodate 4,500 more
Chandigarh, April 17 Nearly 4,000 students have already been admitted in different schools of Mani Majra. A team led by the district education officer today visited various schools of the area and found that about 4,500 students can be accommodated in
those schools. The administration spokesperson said with this new development all the students displaced because of the negligent attitude of the private schools owners of Mani Majra would be accommodated in the nearby areas and no student would be without a school in UT Chandigarh. The schools identified for additional seats include, Government High School, Sector 7; GMHS, Sector 26 (P): GMHS, Sector 26 (TM); GGSSS, Sector 20 B; GMHS, Sector 28 D and GMSSS, Sector 20 D. |

New assignments for lecturers
Chandigarh, April 17 A. L. Gauba, chemistry lecturer at Government College for Girls, Sector 42, and Santosh Kalra, Hindi lecturer at Government College, Sector 46, have been appointed deans, college (instructions) at Government College, Sector 11, and Government College for Girls, Sector 11, respectively. Shyam Sunder, lecturer in Hindi at Government College for Girls, Sector 11, will now be the vice-principal of Government College, Sector 42, and Harjinder Singh, lecturer in Physical Education at Government College, Sector 11, have been appointed vice-principal of Government College, Sector 46. |

City to get 16 more schools
Chandigarh, April 17 While two school buildings in Sectors 56 and 38 (West) have been completed as many as nine are at an advanced stage of construction. Meanwhile, extension of buildings in 19 others has also been proposed. New model schools would be constructed at Sectors 48, 49, 50, 51,55 at Hallo Majra while Sectors 29, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54 and Kishangarh would house high schools. Senior secondary schools would also come up in Mauli Colony, Indira Colony and Palsora. These schools would cater to growing future needs as one school would be able to accommodate around 1300 students. |

Chandigarh, April 17 At MCM DAV College, Sector 36, as many as five three-year add-on courses - cosmetology and beauty care, video reporting, web designing and multimedia, interior decoration and designing and French - have been introduced in the past two years. The best thing is that students have the option to pursue these courses along with their routine degree courses. The college has the maximum number of options for B.Sc, including food science and quality control, microbial and food technology, besides medical, non-medical and vocational options. Talking about the popularity of these courses, principal of the college Puneet Bedi, said, “These days students prefer to go in for professional courses. In languages also, students are opting for French.” Government Home Science College, Sector 10, already runs a postgraduate diploma in fashion designing and now the subject has been introduced at the graduation level. “Most of the students of the diploma course have already been placed with export houses at Delhi, Chandigarh and Baddi. A diploma in child guidance and counselling is also on the cards,” informed principal of the college Kavita Marriya. At GGDSD College, Sector 32, a two-year postgraduate course in entrepreneurship and family business will be introduced for which the college claims to have obtained the UGC approval. The college had introduced M.Sc (informatics) two years ago and the students who completed the course had already been placed, said principal Dr A.C. Vaid. “Since 1994, we have introduced about 52 programmes and all of them are running successfully,” informs Vaid. Dev Samaj College, Sector 45, will also be introducing a postgraduate diploma in dress designing and bachelor in business administration and information technology as a new subject this year. “Last year, the college introduced postgraduate diplomas in computer applications, psychology and economic (honours). DAV College, Sector 10, plans to introduce a postgraduate diploma in business management this year. Last year, the college had introduced masters in business economics and M.Sc in bio-informatics and biotechnology. “The response for these courses has been tremendous. The trend among the students is to go in for those courses that can get them job opportunities,” informed principal S. Marriya. |

‘Lamhe-2007’ at Sukhmani institute
Dera Bassi, April 17 Dean, cultural affairs, SSIET, welcomed the chief guest Swarna Ram, minister of technical education and industrial training, Dr S.K. Salwan, vice-chancellor Punjab Technical University, Dr R.P. Singh, dean PTU, Dr R.P.S. Bedi, deputy registrar, PTU, and the other dignitaries. Students securing the first and second positions in the academics as well as in cultural activities were given prizes. ‘Aadhaar’ all set for release
Chandigarh, April 17 After years of turmoil and sincere efforts by Sunjay, the film is ready and being subjected to reviews by several artistes and the press at different places. ‘Aadhaar’ will be released under the aegis of SVS Art Empire shortly. It was screened to a scant media audience in the presence of Dr V.N. Singh, director, Government Art Gallery and Museum. Talking to the Chandigarh Tribune, Sunjay, director and lead actor of ‘Aadhaar,’ disclosed that he decided not to include top actors and directors in the project and rely on the guidance of friends and fellow
actors. Sunjay disclosed that an ‘Art Festival’ would be organised in Shimla between April 15 and
