PEC holds career development week

Chandigarh, April 19
A career development week is being held at Punjab Engineering College beginning today. Known to be the first ever career development week in the college, it aims to equip the students before they finally appear for the recruitment drive scheduled for July-August.

Giving details of the programme, Dr M.L. Gupta, training and placement officer, said, “The career development week will help the students verify companies and learn about technologies which are in great demand.”

The week will see reputed companies visiting the campus, including Fluor Daniels, Accenture, L&T, etc.

More than 300 students attended a presentation made by officials of Fluor Daniels who visited the campus today.

In preparation for the special week, mock placements were also held in the college on April 14, which saw the participation of more than 200 students. After the test, various interview panels were also formed to give the students a feel of how the real placements take place.

Function organised

Mohali
The Arya Yuva Samaj of the DAV Public Senior Secondary School here celebrated the birth anniversary of Mahatma Hansraj at the school. Principal Jaya Bhardwaj presided over the function and said the mahatma had pioneered the DAV network in the country, thus benefiting the younger generation in a big way. A variety of competitions competitions and activities were held on the occasion. — TNS

Seminar: A seminar was organised at Swami Ram Tirtha Public High School, Phase IV, here, on the occasion of World Consumer Rights Day on Wednesday. The interactive session was led by Renuka Salwan who explained to the students the importance of using the ISI and Agmark consumer goods. She also made the students aware how these marks were misused. Director of the school Sujata Sharma thanked the forum for organising the seminar. — TNS

Exhibition: An exhibition on “Our India” was organised at Golden Public School here on Thursday. Held by the Haryana postal circle, there were 600 exhibits on display, showcasing 120 first day covers, 300 stamps and other philatelic items. The latest scented stamps issued by the department of posts titled sandalwood and fragrance of roses were a hit with the students. Over 400 students from Golden Public School, Lala Sawan Ram Memorial Public School and NCC High School saw were present. — TNS

Awareness programme: It was a day long awareness program aimed at raising the civic consciousness of the city. The students of Saupin’s School, Sector 32, under the aegis of the Saupin’s Community Service Organisation (SCSO) visited the Sector 22 market on Tuesday donating dustbins, raising awareness of civic hygiene and even putting up a street play on caring for the environment. While a total of 120 students from Class VII participated in the program, city mayor Harjinder Kaur came and played ‘activist’ with them lauding their efforts. — TNS

166 receive degrees

Mohali
166 management and computer applications students were conferred degrees by Prof S.K. Salwan, vice-chancellor of Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar, at the fifth annual convocation of Gian Jyoti Institute of Management and Technology, here on Thursday. In his convocation address, Professor Salwan enumerated the need for professional and vocational education in the industry. — TNS

Students enthral: 'Fiesta 2007', the annual function of Shaheed Udham Singh Polytechnic College, was organised on the college campus at Tangori, near here. The show featured captivating events and presentations by college students, including skits, solo songs and Punjabi folk dances. Chief guest and chairman of the college Sukhwinder Singh Sidhu congratulated the students and faculty members for organising the function successfully. — TNS

18 get jobs: NIIT Technologies, one of the top 10 IT Software companies of India, has selected 18 engineering students of CSE, IT and MCA at a joint campus placement drive held at Chandigarh Engineering College (CEC), Landran. Students from 13 colleges participated in this drive. The selected candidates will be given a package of Rs 2.7 lakh per annum. Anupam Jauhari from NIIT Technologies conducted the interviews along with his team of five other senior officers. — TNS

Appointed: Dr Baljeet S. Kapoor, former principal of the Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology, Sector 26, here, has been appointed director, Doaba Institute of Engineering and Technology. Before joining Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology, Kapoor was the director of Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh,. Dr Kapoor said he was looking forward to his new assignment. —TNS

Course in German: The Regional Institute of English, Sector 32, in collaboration with the Indo-German Language and Culture Society launched a 16-week proficiency course in German - ‘Start Deutsch A1’ here on Wednesday. E. Weller, language director (Asia), Max Muller Bhavan, New Delhi, announced scholarships for the best students. The German centre will provide faculty, organise exams and provide study material. The course will start in the middle of May. —TNS

Medical camp: The Desh Bhagat Ayurvedic College and Hospital organised a function at Rattan Pallon village where people were made aware of the ill effects of drug addiction. The institute adopted the village for the year 2007-08 to provide free medical facilities. Students of the college exhibited posters and banners showing healthy living and ill effects of drug addiction. —TNS

RIMT students excel: Hina Bansal and Sofi Garg of the RIMT-Institute of Management and Computer Technology, Mandi Gobindgarh, have brought laurels to the institute by securing the first and second positions, respectively, in the BCA III semester examination conducted by Punjab Technical University. Another student from the institute Ajay Kumar Vij, who appeared in the BCA V semester, got seventh position in the university. Hukam Chand Bansal, chairman of RIMT Group of Institutes, congratulated the students. — TNS

Dharna by teachers' body

The DAV College teaching and non-teaching union held a dharna today in front of the principal’s office as a part of their ongoing struggle to get statutory provisions of the Panjab University calendar implemented with respect to encashment of earned leave and provident fund on total salary.

R.K. Anand, secretary, appealed to the management to accept their demands of PF on total salary and encashment of earned leave at the earliest. He also appealed to the principal that a bursar be appointed as per the norms. The members also threatened to intensify the stir if their demands were not met.

Artists seek space to display works

Panchkula, April 19
The Unique Society of Artists, a renowned association of artists of the region, organised a painting workshop-cum-exhibition at Bal Bhavan, Sector 15, here today. The event, which saw the participation from 15 artists, concluded today.

At the closing ceremony of the exhibition, Neerja Shekhar, deputy commissioner, interacted with artists and those attending the workshop. All artists completed two new works during the workshop on varied themes in different mediums.

Ten per cent of the proceeds will go to Zila Bal Kalyan Parishad. General secretary K.R. Koli put forth the demand for an artists' gallery in the city before the DC. "Though there is a college and there are a number of artists in the city, there is no place to display their works. We have urged the DC to provide space for display of works on the lines of Chandigarh to which she has agreed," he said.
