Farmer kills himself

Abohar, April 19
A debt-ridden farmer yesterday committed suicide at Kandhwala Hazarkhan village near here, sources said. The village was lashed by heavy hailstorms thrice during the last year, Sukhdev Singh Sandhu, a progressive farmer said. The Congress-led government had expressed its inability to compensate the affected farming community as criteria could not be revised then.

According to information, Charanjit Singh (32) son of Jodh Singh, had been feeling upset for the last two months due to financial constraints. He had already sold a major part of his seven-acre land to repay debts but natural calamities aggravated his problems.

He finally ended his life by consuming insecticide, leaving behind mother, wife and two children. — OC
