Chandigarh, April 20
The Punjab government today chargesheeted former director-general of Punjab police S.S. Virk, who is currently under suspension. He was charged on four counts in the chargesheet prepared by the state Home Department.
The government's order came a day after Virk had challenged his suspension in letter to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. Sources in the government confirmed the development.
Technically, the chargesheet will be sent to the MHA and a copy to Virk, sources said, adding that the action of the government was on expected lines as the Home Department
had given clear indications a few days ago that a chargesheet was being prepared.
The chargesheet states that Virk misused his authority in purchasing a piece of land in Mohali. It mentions that the deal was benami, also that the land belonged to a war widow and the government had debarred the widow from selling it for a period of 10 years.
It alleges that Virk had not informed the government about the said financial transaction. It alleges that Virk paid some "unaccounted" money through underhand means to a Mohali-based property dealer to buy the property.
The sale deed was registered for only Rs 19 lakh while the actual sale was for Rs 1.14 crore. Virk was suspended on the basis of a statement given by one Vijaypal Singh Dimpy, who had alleged that Virk had paid Rs 50 lakh through cheque to him and some cash to buy the property. On April 11, the MHA had "prematurely ended" Virk's deputation to Punjab and shifted him back to his parent cadre of Maharashtra.
