492 donate blood

Chandigarh, April 22
As many as 492 volunteers, including 136 women, donated blood at a camp organised by the Sant Nirankari Mission at Sant Nirankari Satsang Bhavan, Sector 30, here today.

The camp was conducted by a team of doctors headed by Dr Usha Rao of the PGI.

Kesho Rak Nandwani, zonal in charge of the mission, said the Chandigarh zone of the mission would hold 10 camps between April and September. — TNS

CFA trials: 10 boys shortlisted

The two-day selection trials to fill vacant seats at the Chandigarh Football Academy (CFA), run by the Chandigarh Administration, at the Sector 42 Sports Complex, here concluded this evening. As many as 10 boys from all over the northern region were shortlisted for medical test and final selection.

Chandigarh sports director-cum-additional deputy commissioner Inderjit Singh Sandhu, joint director Dr J.P.S Sidhu, Lake Club general manager Reet Mohinder Singh and football coaches Harjinder Singh and Tejinder Singh were present during the final session.

Approximately 50 boys appeared for the trials. According to I.S. Sandhu, the shortlisted boys would undergo medical test on Monday before the final selection is made to induct them into the CFA.

Those shortlisted boys are: midfielders Amandeep Singh, Subhash Pal, Simranjit Singh, defenders Dhananjay Sharma, Deepak Devrai, strikers Arashpreet Singh, Jonny Kumar, Jajbaj Singh, Pankaj Negi and goalkeeper Harpreet Singh.

Coaches S.K. Joshi and Sarabjit Singh conducted athletic tests which included various physical tests, shuttle run, standing broad jumps, throwing a 2-kg medicine ball and 800 metre race for endurance.

At the concluding session, the aspirants played an exhibition match against CFA players for 45 minutes. Later, they were put to test for long range shooting and dribbling.

Mohali whip Patiala, enter semis

Mohali, April 22
A five-wicket haul by Sumit Agnihotri helped the Mohali team beat Patiala on the basis of their first innings lead in the Punjab State Inter-District (Under-15) Cricket Tournament at PCA stadium here today.

With this win, Mohali moved to the semifinal of the tournament.

Resuming from 21 for no loss, Patiala were bundled out for a paltry 122 in 57.3 overs in the first innings thus conceding lead of 166 runs. Karan Sidhu made 22 runs, which was the highest for the team. Vikram contributed 16 runs.

Sumit Agnihotri ripped apart the batting lineup of the rivals with his disciplined bowling. He claimed five wickets for 62 while Srijan took three wickets for 26.

At the end of the final day today, the Mohali team had scored 141 for 4 in the second innings. Sachin Sohal remained not out on 38 runs while Navjot scored 29 runs.

Brief scores:

Mohali (first innings): 288 for 7 in 95 overs.

Patiala (first innings): 122 all out in 57.3 overs (Karan Sidhu 22, Vikram Sodhi 16, Sumit Agnihotri 5 for 62, Srijan 3 for 26).

Mohali (second innings): 141 for 4 in 44 overs (Navjot 29, Kanwar Singh 21, Sachin Sohal 38 n.o, Vikram 3 for 33).

Local player Digvijay S. Naruka got the better of Pankaj Kumar of Chandigarh 4-5 (3), 4-0, 4-0 in the boys under-16 singles in the final qualifying round of the AITA Championship Series which concluded at the CLTA courts here today.

In the girls u-16 singles category, Rajvir Kaur of Chandigarh thrashed Rajveer Kaur from Punjab 4-0, 4-0 in the final round. The matches for main draw will start tomorrow.

Blue Bird, Manav Mangal win

Blue Bird Skating Club boys team clinched the first place in the Roller hockey event on the final day of the first Bhavan Vidyalaya Roller Skating Carnival held at Bhavan Vidyalaya School Rink in Sector 15, here, today.

In the roll ball sub-junior boys category, Manav Mangal School, Panchkula, bagged the first place beating the Blue Bird, Panchkula team.

The results:

Roll ball: Junior girls: 1 Bhavan Vidyalaya (team A), 2 Bhavan Vidyalaya (team B);

Gaurav steers CFI into final

Chandigarh, April 22
An unbeaten knock of 30 runs and a fine bowling spell by Gaurav Gambhir enabled T20 CFI XI to register an emphatic win by six wickets over Delhi in the semifinals of the Twenty20 (Under-19) Cricket Tournament at the Cricket Stadium in Sector 16, here today.

T20 CFI won the toss and opted to field first. Gaurav Gambhir claimed three wickets for 11 runs in four overs. The Delhi team was bundled out for just 68 runs in 14.2 overs.

In reply, Gurkirat and Saurav Kumar contributed unbeaten 30 and 19 runs respectively. T20 CFI XI won the match by 6 wickets in 9.4 overs. — TNS

Carrom calendar released

Chandigarh, April 22
The Chandigarh Carrom Association has released its annual calendar for the current year: 10th St Stephen’s Carrom Ranking Tournament: May 19-22; 17th Chandigarh State Carrom Championship: July 28-August 1; 10th Raj Kumar Babuta Memorial Prize Money: September 1-3.

The Chandigarh Carrom Association has also decided to organise a coaching camp for budding players.

Besides the above meets, the association will field its team in all national and zonal tournaments being organised by the All-India Carrom Federation. — TNS
