PGI halts work on wall after protest
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 23
The PGI authorities had to halt the construction of a boundary wall on its land today after residents of Janata colony, near Naya Gaon village, protested against the move, complaining that it would block their link to the city.

According to information, the PGI authorities had decided to construct a boundary wall around the complex after they got the land demarcated freshly six months ago.

The new demarcation showed that the road on the rear end of the PGI housing complex, being used by the residents of Janata colony as a link between the colony and main road, was part of the PGI property.

In the absence of the road, the residents of the village had to take a long detour going toward engineering college, to reach the city. The PGI route cut the distance to merely half a kilometre.

After the demarcation, the PGI administration got its more than one-and-half acre land evicted.

This morning, when the work started, over 200 people gathered at the scene around 10 am, protesting against the move. The UT police reached the scene immediately.

The PGI authorities said they were concerned about the security on the hospital premises and thus had to construct the boundary wall on their land.

Later, on the intervention of SDM (central) Ankur Gupta it was decided to keep the road open till alternative arrangements were made in this regard.

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 23
The number of people affected with glaucoma (kala motia) is between 65 and 85 million while a 30 per cent increase is expected in the number of patients of this irreversible blindness around the world during the next 10 years. This was stated by Dr Karanjeet S. Kooner, associate professor of glaucoma services, University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Centre, Dallas, while talking to mediapersons here today.

Dr Kooner, recipient of several awards, including Physicians Recognition Award of the USA, has a keen interest in glaucoma epidemiology and glaucoma surgeries. He said the disease was ranked fourth among causes behind blindness 10 years ago. However, an increase in longevity and availability of diagnosis facilities have brought the diseases at number among those responsible for blindness.

Cataract (white motia) is curable. It affects 45 per cent of the patients of blindness while 8 per cent of the blinds were the victims of glaucoma, added the US specialist.

Only a regular check up of the eyes was the remedy as there were no specific symptoms for detection of disease, advised the doctor.

No exact cause responsible for the disease had been traced till now. Professor Sunandan Sood, of the GMCH, Sector 32, said the glaucoma clinic of the hospital was functional on every Monday under the supervision of Dr Suresh Kumar, glaucoma specialist.
