Chandigarh, April 25
An inter-state gang of cricket bookies operating from a marriage palace owned by the family of an inspector-general of Haryana police was busted today by the Sonepat police.
In a raid in the wee hours the police arrested nine persons from Sangeeta Garden, a marriage palace near Murthal, on the G.T. Road.
According to sources, the Sonepat police learnt from informers that certain persons were staying in Sangeeta Garden and accepting bets from punters on the Sri Lanka-New Zealand semi-final cricket match of the ongoing World Cup. A police party under the leadership of Murthal SHO Yashpal Singh was organised .
The police allegedly recovered 23 mobile phones, two laptops, one printer, two recording machines, one TV and a calculator from Deepak, Praveen, Jai Bhagwan, Nitin, Sunil, Rajesh Chaudhry, Dwarka Dass, Dinesh and Pawan. While Deepak belongs to Delhi, Praveen and Jai Bhagwan belong to Jhajjar district of Haryana. Nitin and Sunil are from Abohar in Punjab. Rajesh Chaudhry came from
Jharkhand. Dwarka Dass, Dinesh and Pawar are residents of Sonepat. The police says the fact these persons came from far off states like Jharkhand, indicated the inter-state ramifications of the arrests.
The marriage palace belongs the family of Laik Ram Dabas, I.G., Vigilance, Haryana power utilities.
Dabas confirmed that Sangeeta Garden belonged to his wife. But, he said, the marriage palace had been hired out to two persons, one caterer and one property dealer. He said he or his wife had no role in the day to day running of the marriage palace. He said the palace was hired out to the property dealer only a few days ago.
