Summer school on nanotechnology begins today
Mohali, April 30 Sponsored by the department of science and technology, Central Government, the major emphasis of this five-day activity is to encourage and motivate the young talent of the country. The first school of its kind, the workshop will focus on synergy developing between nanotechnology and healthcare. The school will see lectures by expert faculty drawn from India and abroad, technical presentations and demonstrations on advanced techniques used in nanotechnology research. At least 26 participants, including 22 students as well as 4 industry participants, from all over the country will participate in the school. The participants will also be given chance to make an oral presentation on their research activities for 20 minutes. Selection of the participants was made by an expert committee. NIPER director has decided to give away one award to the best presentation during the workshop in order to promote the young flair of the country. |
ONGC enter Twenty20 semifinals
Chandigarh, April 30 The ONGC team defeated the Himachal XI by seven wickets. Later the ONGC team snatched full four points against the Minerva Cricket Academy beating them by 26 runs. In Group B fixture played at the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex, the Professional Cricket Club registered its second successive win by routing JJ’s XI by four wickets. With this win, the Professional Cricket Club have secured eight full points. In another Group B encounter, title aspirants All India Electricity Sports Control Board defeated Moody ICL XI by 25 runs. The power men tasted their first triumph after losing their opener to the Professional Cricket Club. A brilliant unbeaten knock of 63 by Ajay Ratra and his 105-run third wicket partnership with Rizwan Shamsad (51) was the highlight of ONGC’s 26-run win over the Minerva Cricket Academy. For his outstanding performance with the bat, wicketkeeper batsman Ajay Ratra was adjudged the man of the match. Bank of India general manager Nupur Mitra presented the MoM award to Ajay Ratra. Batting first, ONGC made 178 for 5 in 20 overs. After losing three wickets for 41 runs, ONGC were bolstered by Ajay Ratra and Rizwan. They thrashed the Minerva bowlers and took their total to 146 before Rizwan departed. Ratra and Sumit (15) steered their team to win. Ratra made 63 in 49 balls and hit eight fours. He occupied the crease for 79 minutes. The Minerva Cricket Academy replied with 152 for 4 in 20 overs. Anupam top scored with 71 runs. In association with openver Abhinav (49, 5x4s) Anupam contributed 72 runs for the third wicket stand. Gaurav remained not out on 21. Earlier, ONGC beat Himachal XI by seven wickets. Spirited Himachal XI made 118 for 7 in 20 overs. Their openers Sapan Deep (54, 7x4s, 2x6s) and Ashish Kukreti (27) gave Himachal XI a solid start by putting on 72 runs. A 60-run partnership for the third wicket between Radhey Shyam (50) and Rizwan Shamsad (30) paved the way for ONGC to surpass Himachal XI’s total by making 119 for 3 in 18.1 overs. Radhey Sham was declared man of the match. The AICSCB XI registered their first win as they defeated the Moody ICL XI by 25 runs. Batting first, the AIESCB XI 155 for 4 in 20 overs. Sudhir got two wickets for 32 runs. The Moody ICL XI was dismissed for 130 in 19.3 overs. Vishal played a defiant 72. B. Mohanty was declared the man of the match. An unbeaten 45 by man of the match Bhageshwar Bisht helped the Professional Cricket Club beat the JJ’s XI by four wickets. the JJ”s XI batted first and scored 101. Sunny (35) and Umesh Kaira (24) were the main scorers for them. Ramesh (4 for 17) restricted the JJ’s XI. Kamal got two wickets for 17 runs. In reply, the Professional Cricket Club achieved the victory target in 18 overs scoring 102 for 6. Bhageshwar remained not out on 45 from as many deliveries. He hit five fours. Chandigarh lift Sushil Bali trophy
Mohali, April 30 Chandigarh who had gained a first innings lead of 59 runs were eventually all out for 282 runs in the second innings in 121.2 overs. Their opening batsman and skipper Manan Vorha, who had been in a great nick in the tournament, went on to record another splendid century (113) studded with 18 fours off 267 balls. He was involved in a 58-run stand for the 2nd wicket with Veerkaran Goel and a 5th wicket stand of 57 runs with Subham Mahajan and a 54-run stand with Sahnul Rathi for the 6th wicket. Shubam Mahajan (29), Sahnul Rathi (26), Hitesh Bhuttani (30), and Lovesh bansal (34) were the other notable contributors. St. Kabir, Carmel girls win basketball matches
Chandigarh, April 30 In another match, Carmel Convent, Sector 9, girls toppled DAV Model School, Sector 15, girls’ team 28-12. Aanchal scored 16 points, while Anandita scored severn points. From the loser’s side, Vidhya and Pragya scored 9 and three points, respectively. In the boys section, DAV Model School, Sector 15, cagers outclassed Saupin’s, Sector 32, team 37-09. Sahil and Yesuraj scored 18 and eight points, respectively, for the DAV-15 team. From the other side, Anupam scored five points. In the second encounter, GMSSS, Sector 33, team thrashed St. Joseph’s School, Sector 44, team (34-04). Gurpreet (13), Mukesh (8) were the main contributors for the GMSSS team while Kunwarpreet and Romit scored two points each. Chandigarh, April 30 The meet is being held at Pinegrove School, Subathu. Ajay Narwal of Pinegrove scored 18 points, while Varun and Parampal got 16 each. In another match, YPS, Patiala, beat APS, Dagshai, 43-27. Litesh (16) was the top scorer for YPS. For APS, Sangram scored 16 points. Kirpal Sagar Academy, Nawanshahr, defeated YPS, Mohali, 32-16. Jaspreet (17) and Gurpreet (15) shone for the winners. In the opening match of the girls’ section, Pinegrove School defeated YPS, Patiala, 32-5. Pragalbha scored 12 points for Pinegrove.
