New Delhi, April 30
Seeking to put the Mulayam Singh government in the dock, union minister Kapil Sibal today sought a CBI inquiry into alleged muti-crore scam under which the poor were deprived of foodgrains under the Centre’s Sampoorn Gramin Rojgar Yogana.
Sibal, convener of the Congress media committee for Uttar Pradesh elections, accused the state government and its officers of conspiring with private players to exploit the poor.
He alleged that the foodgrains meant for payment as remuneration to people below the poverty line were diverted to Bangladesh by private firms in several districts of UP with the help of government officials.
He said a systematic loot was taking place in the state and the government was not willing to give permission for holding a CBI probe into the scam running into crores of rupees.
He alleged that 90 per cent of the foodgrains given by the Centre were diverted to Nepal and Bangladesh in at least 30 districts, including Gonda, Basti and Biswan, and action had not been taken place against officers or private players.
He said district magistrates of 30 districts wrote to the state government intimating misappropriation of foodgrains in their respective districts. An inquiry revealed misappropriation of foodgrains worth Rs 457 crore in Gonda district alone.
