HC asks rly ministry to submit report

Ahmedabad, May 1
The Gujarat High Court today asked the railway ministry to submit the final report of the U.C. Banerjee Committee on the Sabarmati Express carnage at Godhra on June 21 to decide whether it can be tabled in Parliament or not.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Y.R. Meena and Justice A.S. Dave today gave this directive, while hearing a civil application filed by the Union of India to allow it to present the report before Parliament. The court has asked the ministry to present the final report of the committee in a sealed cover on June 21.

Earlier, a single-judge bench of the court had in October, 2006 quashed the appointment of the committee holding it “unconstitutional”. — PTI
