Mgmt quota in Chitkara goes
Tribune News Service

Mohali, May 3
In an unprecedented move, the Chitkara Educational Trust has returned all management quota seats in its engineering, pharmacy and architecture courses to Punjab Technical University. “Admission to the college will be strictly on merit and through the counselling done by the university as we have given away our discretionary powers for admitting students to Chitkara,” stated Dr Madhu Chitkara, general secretary of the Trust.

According to the seat matrix available on the website of Punjab Technical University - www.ptu.ac.in, Chitkara has a total of 420 seats in engineering (120 seats in CSE, 120 seats in ECE, 60 seats in EE and 60 in ME). In the normal course, the college would have been entitled to 120 seats in which it could have admitted students at its discretion.

According to industry sources, this is a positive step and will ensure that meritorious students get admission instead of seats going to the highest bidder. The general premium in good engineering colleges in the region is put at anything from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh per seat.

It may be recalled that the estimates committee of the ninth Lok Sabha had called the charging of capitation fees a "national disgrace" for three important reasons. First, it makes education a saleable commodity; second, it benefits only the rich and the affluent; third, it does not take merit into account.

Chandigarh, May 3
After years of tussle between Panjab University and the State Bank of India, the university has finally got possession of six acres of its prime land on the Panipat-New Delhi stretch of the National Highway.

The piece of land was now worth several crores, said the VC, adding that ideas were being generated as to what best possible use the land could be put to.
