Chandigarh, May 3
Every nick and corner of her room is studded with trophies, medals and mementos. Name the sport or any academic activity and she has a trophy in her name. Her vitae curricula speak about her versatility what this 15-year-old girl has achieved in all India school level, and district, state, and national levels.

She’s none other than shy but much confident Aanchal Bajwa, the recipient of an international award for working in slums and for schools for the blind. “Besides being a sports person, I love to work for the needy and suffering humanity. I am associated with the Bright Spart Charitable Trust and have designed cards, supposed to be dedicated for providing education to the underprivileged children”, she said.

Aanchal, a Class XI student of Yadavindra Public School, Mohali, came to limelight during the 15 th Chandigarh Open Swimming Championship held at the Panjab University pool in September 2003, where she won four gold medals, three in 50 m breast stroke, free style, butterfly and one in 100 m free style. Then she graduated to the state level swimming championships where she secured the second position in the 50 m breast stroke event and the third position in the 50 m back stroke event.

“It was during this meet that I got prizes of Rs 200 and Rs 100, respectively. Though it was just a token money, but for me it was much more than that”. After that there was no stopping for her and she kept on winning medals in state and district level swimming championships. “I got one silver (50 m, free style) and two bronze medals (950 m breast stroke and 100 m breast stroke) in the district swimming championship held at Ropar and a gold and a bronze recently during the Pathways Invitational Interschool Swimming meet.

Being adventurous from the very beginning, she completed a trekking programme conducted by the National Foundation Himachal Pradesh twice for Kulu Manali and Narkanda. “It was an out of the world kind of feeling to track at the height of 13,500 feet at Kulu valley. I also did river rafting and rock climbing at Narkanda, which is 9,500 ft above sea level”.

“Actually, I think my biggest asset is my versatile nature. That’s why I keep on switching over from one game to the another. Suddenly, I generated immense interest in athletics”, she said. Aanchal participated in many athletics events and she always returned home with medals.

Aanchal set new records in 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 800 m, 1500 m, long jump (field event) during the inter house cross country meet held at her school and bagged the PT Usha trophy for being the best runner. She won five gold medals in different track events and got a special trophy for being the best athlete.

Then she tried her hand at martial arts. How could it have been that she should go unnoticed here too. She clinched the best player’s trophy in the Chandigarh State Junior Wushu Championship held at the Skating Rink, Sector 10, and also participated in wushu championships.

Aanchal is equally focused for her studies. She received a ‘Scholar’s tie’ for securing above 85 per cent marks for three consecutive years (2003-2005) and also received a scholarship of Rs 16,000. Besides, she was awarded many a time for her being exceptionally good in studies.

This is not all, she is a good singer too. A CD of her devotional songs “Swaranjali” was released in 2004. And not the least, she has a taste for paintings also and has won numerous accolades in it.
