PU Notes International Sun Day was celebrated by the energy research centre of Panjab University on Thursday. The celebrations were aimed at popularising the non-conventional sources of energy. An exhibition on “Solar Energy at Work” was organised in which solar water heating systems for domestic and industrial use, solar photovoltaic home lighting system, fan and radio, solar drier, domestic and community solar cooker and solar distillation system were on display. Prof R.C. Sobti, vice-chancellor, PU, visited the exhibition and emphasised the use of alternate sources of energy on the PU campus. Prof V.K. Rattan, honorary director of the centre, said as conventional energy sources such as petrol, natural gas and coal were depleting fast, there was an immediate need to harness the energy from the sun. Large-scale use of non-conventional sources of energy could reduce the impact of present energy crisis being faced by the country. Prof Rattan promised to extend the state-of-the-art facilities of the centre to the students who wanted to carry out some development studies in the area. S.S. Bedi, regional director, ministry of non-conventional energy sources (MNES), said a cumulative potential of 85000 MW of energy existed in solar thermal, small hydro, bio and wind energy. Nearly 39 lakh biogas plants, 3.52 crore improved cook-stoves 6 lakh solar cookers, 76 MW biomass-based gasifiers had already been installed in the country. Schedule

Banur Prof Satish Kapoor, dean, commerce and business management faculty, Panjab University, Chandigarh, was the chief guest and Prof M.R. Aggarwal, department of economics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, was the guest of honour. The seminar was presided over by Ashwani Garg, chairman. Prof S.P. Singh, former dean, commerce, and chairman, University Business School (UBS), PU, said globalisation was integration of economics under WTO's compliance procedure covering everything that should move or cause movement in cooperation by consensus through the latest technology with pooled knowledge and updated skills. Prof M.R. Aggarwal, Prof R.S. Ghuman, department of economics, Punjabi University Patiala, Prof Surinder Shukla, department of correspondence studies, PU, Dr R.K. Gupta, department of commerce, PU, and an MBA student Yogesh Kumar spoke on the topic. Mohali Sukhwinder Singh, chairman, SUSCET management committee, informed mediapersons that the coveted empanelling comes close on the heels of many a successful placement drives conducted on SUSCET campus in the recent past by TCS as well as several other multinational companies. AWARDED: An award ceremony was held at the Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology (NIIFT) to give away the Groz Beckert Scholarships. DAV College staff stages dharna

R.K. Anand, secretary, DAV College Teachers’ Union, appealed to the college principal and management to implement the provisions of the Panjab University calendar and instructions of the DPI so that the normalcy could be restored. He said the college authorities should take the recent communication from the registrar of the Panjab University seeking comments from the college with regard to the deduction of provident fund seriously. Others who spoke on the occasion included Dr Dinesh Talwar, senator, Prof A.L. Singla, Prof Ghanshyam Dev, Prof Avanindra Chopra, Roop Narain and Somnath, president, Non-Teaching Employees Union. |

Yoga training for city students on anvil
Chandigarh, May 4 Disclosing this the DPI (S) S.K. Setia, said, “It is the brainchild of home secretary Krishan Mohan which will help students reach the pinnacle through healthy minds and fit bodies. Our objective is to make our students mentally alert and physically lithe.” Telling further, Setia said, “Yoga will be of great benefit especially to those who are into sports as it is all about concentration.” Yoga will be taught by the teachers of B.Ed Colleges and the classes would most probably be held during the morning assembly or in the free or games period. “Actually, the concept is in the pipeline and we are chalking out the programme. Very soon, it will be done,” added DPI. |
