Health department to conduct regular raids

Chandigarh, May 4
The teams of assistant director, Health (Malaria), Medical Officer of Health, and local Health authorities would start conducting raids in the Union Territory of Chandigarh under Epidemic Disease Act 1857. It was decided at a meeting of the Public Health Action Committee here today. The meeting was convened by director, Health Services, Chandigarh.

It was also decided that notices be served on the offenders under Chandigarh Prevention and Control of Malaria, Dengue and Japanese Encephalitis for creating mosquito genic conditions.

All the departments of the Union Territory of Chandigarh would pool their resources to prevent these diseases and steps would be taken for periodic chlorination at the source level and prevention of open defecation, decided the meeting.

The Public Health department has decided to rectify leakage of water supply pipes and would cross check the water supply and sewerage pipes in high-risk areas like colonies and villages in the union territory.

It was decided to take the help of the police department, and issue the notices to defaulters to implement the preventive measures in this direction. The department of Forest and Wild Life, Veterinary Department, and Horticulture Department has agreed to cooperate with the Health department in the prevention and control of bird flu, which has become a pandemic in the world.

Newborn survives respiratory attack

Satuti and Vishal Sehdev are a happy lot as their newborn baby has survived miraculously after sustained efforts by doctors of a private hospital here.

The newly born baby was referred from Ropar to a hospital here with complaints of difficult breathing. A team of Cheema Medical Complex (CMC) went to Ropar to bring the baby. However, on way to the hospital, the four-hour-old baby stopped breathing.

The baby was put on ventilators. In the meantime, Dr V.J.S. Virdi reached the spot and the baby’s condition was brought under control.

The baby was put on artificial respiratory support for eight days at CMC. In addition, the baby’s blood was changed, but unabated sepsis caused the child to bleed profusely from various sites, including lungs and GIT. The child finally responded to the treatment provided by the doctors at the hospital.

Dr B.S.Cheema, director of CMC, told at a press conference here today that the baby’s condition was now stable and the child would be discharged in a few days.

Two-day workshop on cervical spine surgery

Important surgeries pertaining to the cervical region would be demonstrated as live telecast during a two-day workshop on cervical spine surgery at PGI, Chandigarh. The Department of Orthopaedics of PGIMER, Chandigarh is organising this workshop to be started tomorrow.

The cervical spondylosis a common ailment sometimes in old age precipitates cervical spondolytic myelopathy resulting in weakness of hand functions and difficulty in walking. In addition to this, neck is also involved in injuries and infections like Tuberculosis.

The present concept of treatment is to decompress the spinal cord in the cervical area, which could be from front or back or combined along with the stabilisation by plates, screw and rods. We shall also provide opportunity to the delegates to assist in surgery.

CME on artery disease at GMCH

A CME on current perspective in coronary artery disease would be organised by Department of Medicine, Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh on Sunday.

Professor K.K. Talwar, a renowned cardiologist and the director, PGIMER, Chandigarh, would be the chief guest and deliver the guest lecture.

Eminent cardiologist from AIIMS, G.B. Pant Hospital, Army Hospital, Artemis Hospital, New Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh, and Dayanand Medical College, Ludhiana, were expected to participate in the CME.

Senior citizens told about ortho problems

Chandigarh, May 4
Dr Sudhir Garg, head, Orthopaedics Department, Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, advised and guided senior citizens about the ortho problems being faced by them at a function in the Community Centre, Sector 37, here today.

The function was organised by Chandigarh Senior Citizens’ Brotherhood to honour Mayor of Chandigarh Harjinder Kaur.

The orthopaedician made them aware of preventive measures which if taken help in avoiding ortho problems. The problems being faced by the senior citizens concerning their safety and security as well as non-maintenance were brought to the notice of the Mayor. — TNS

State Open Games in October-end

The Chandigarh sports department has decided to organise the Chandigarh State Open Games in the last week of October at various coaching centres here.

Announcing this here today, sports director Inderjit Singh Sandhu said the competitions would be held in nine disciplines for men and women in athletics, cricket, gymnastics, handball, judo, boxing, wrestling, weightlifting and table tennis. The budget for the games had been sanctioned by the competent authorities.

Sandhu, who is also additional deputy commissioner, said the State Open Games were part of the 2007-2008 sports calendar prepared by the Chandigarh sports department to provide competitions to the Chandigarh players.

A sum of Rs 32 lakh has been earmarked for organising 15 competitions from May 2007 to February 2008.

The annual Administrator’s Cup Football Tournament for boys under-17 has been scheduled for the first week of September at the Sector 17 Football Stadium and Rs 5 lakh will be spent on the competition.

Joint director sports J.P.S. Sidhu said the Administrator’s Cup for the Inter-School Athletic Meet for under-16 and under-18 boys and girls had been planned in the first week of October and it would involve Rs 3 lakh.

The sports department would also spend Rs 2.5 lakh each for the Inter-School Cricket Tournament for the Adviser’s Cup in the first week of November and the Inter-College Cricket Tournament for the Administrator’s Cup in the second week of December at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium.

The following is the complete calendar for 2007-2008

May 2007: Annual summer coaching camps for sub juniors, juniors and senior boys and girls in May and June (expenses Rs 2.60 lakh) and a high altitude summer coaching camp for the Chandigarh Football Hockey Academy trainees at Chamba/Shillaro (Rs 1.5 lakh).

June: Administrator’s Cup for swimming for sub junior, junior and senior boys and girls in second week at the swimming pool in Sector 23 (Rs 90,000) and the Hot Weather Cricket Tournament for various organisations based in Chandigarh and affiliated to the Chandigarh Cricket Association in the last week of June at the Sector 16 Stadium (Rs 2 lakh).

July: The Chandigarh Water Sports Tournament for sub juniors, junior and seniors boys and girls in second week at the Lake Sports Complex (Rs 90,000).

August: The Administrator’s Cup Tennis for sub juniors, juniors and senior boys and girls in first week at the Lake Sports Complex Tennis Courts (Rs one lakh).

September: The Administrator’s Cup Football Tournament for under-17 boys in first week at Sector 17 and Sector 42 Sports Complexes (Rs 5 lakh).

October: The Administrator’s Cup for the Inter-School Athletic Meet under-16 and U-18 boys and girls in first week at the Sector 7 Sports Complex (Rs 3 lakh).

The Chandigarh State Open Games in athletics, cricket, gymnastics, handball, judo, boxing, wrestling, weightlifting and table tennis in last week (Rs 4 lakh).

November: The Inter-School Cricket Tournament for the Adviser’s Cup in first week at the Sector 16 Stadium (Rs 2.5 lakh).

The Administrator’s Cup volleyball for men and women in last week (Rs 1.5 lakh).

December: The Inter-College Cricket Tournament for the Administrator’s Cup in second week at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium (Rs 2.5 lakh).

January 2008: The Administrator’s Hockey Cup for boys in first week (Rs 1.75 lakh). The Administrator’s Badminton Cup for men and women in last week (1.25 lakh)

February: The Administrator’s Cup for squash for seniors in second week at the Lake Sports Complex (Rs 1.25 lakh).

Meanwhile, the Chandigarh sports department has planned annual summer coaching camps for sub junior and junior boys and girls in different sports disciplines from May 7 to 24. The camps have been planned in athletics, badminton, badminton, basketball, boxing, cricket, cycling, gymnastics, hockey, handball, judo, kabaddi, kho-kho, lawn tennis, rowing, swimming, squash and skating.

A three-member committee with district sports officer J.S. Negi, in charge youth affairs S.K. Joshi and sector officer Partap Singh has been formed to check the daily attendance/training schedule and refreshment.

Commemorative run for Military World Games

As a precursor to the 4th CISM Military World Games- 2007, which are scheduled to be held in Hyderabad in October this year, the Western Command is organising a commemorative run in the city on May 13 to mark +150 days to the Military World Games'.

Carrying the message of ‘friendship through sports’, the run is being organised to create awareness about this mega event among the people of the area, a statement issued here today said. Earlier, such a run was held in New Delhi and 24 other cities across the country on March 27 to mark the 200 days to the games”.

The run would be conducted in three categories -- 10 km run for professional runners (open category), 5 km run for schoolchildren and NCC cadets and 1.5 km run for all invitees and those who would like to take part. A number of other adventure activities had also been planned for the day, which included skydiving.

The 4th Military World Games will be held in Hyderabad from October 14 to 21. All events will be held in Hyderabad, except sailing and triathlon, which will be conducted in Mumbai. About 6,000 athletes and officials from over 127 member countries are expected to participate in the games, which makes it an event ranking next only to the Olympics, both in terms of magnitude and stature. It is for the first time that an Asian country is hosting the games.

The earlier three games were held in Rome (Italy), Zagreb (Croatia) and Catania (Italy) in 1995, 1999 and 2003, respectively. These games are conducted under the aegis of the International Military Sports Council, an international association recognised by the International Olympic Committee.

Jaspal, Bali win billiards matches

Jaspal Singh drubbed Umesh Bhandari 152-61 in the billiards match in the 6th Saurabh Khattar Memorial Billiards and Snooker Championship at the Chandigarh Club, Sector 1, here today.

In a one-sided affair 150-game match, Jaspal dominated the proceedings all the time with his fine shots. He finished winner with a mammoth lead of 91 points.

In the second well-contested match between Judge Bali and Pankaj Gulati, Bali beat Gulati by a lead of just 3 points. The final score of the match was 151-148.

In the third match, G.S. Batra beat Nirmal Sharma by a close margin of 2 points and the final score stood at 150-148.

In the snooker’s best of three frames, Suresh Choudhary beat Harpreet Singh 2-0. In the first frame, Suresh scored 82 points while Harpreep scored 42. Suresh grabbed the second frame too scoring 60 points against 23 points scored by Harpreet.

In another tie, Vikramjeet Singh grabbed the two frames straightway beating Inderjit Singh 2-0 (78-14, 87-22). Navtej Singh defeated Vikas Cucaria 2-1 (55-33, 26-64, 56-27) while in the last tie, Deepinder Singh thrashed Anand Chhibber 2-0 (56-46, 55-19).

Hockey coaches tasked to spot talent

The Chandigarh sports department has deputed hockey coaches Gurminder Singh (sports department) and S.K. Goswami (Sports Authority of India) to spot talent during the Sub-Junior Girls National Hockey Tournament (Under-14) to be held in Bhopal from May 5 to 12.

According to joint director, sports, Dr J.P.S. Sidhu, Gurinder and Goswami will identify players to be invited for the final selection and induction into the Chandigarh Hockey Academy for girls that will start functioning from this year.

The sports department has finished one phase of selection trials for the new academy. Twenty-four girls under 14 years will be inducted into the academy.

Meanwhile, the sports department has been handed over the Sector 18 Government Senior Secondary School sports hostel from the Sports Authority of India, which is running its regional coaching centre.

Tennis training at Lake Club

Chandigarh, May 4
Children in the City Beautiful can now spend their summer vacations in learning the popular game of tennis at the Lake Sports Complex here which has launched coaching for beginners as well as advanced players.

Situated near the picturesque Sukhna Lake, the complex has four synthetic, four grass and four clay courts. Mr Lalit Tandon has been appointed as the senior tennis coach. He would be assisted by a junior coach in running the centre.

Children in the age group of seven years and above are eligible for enrollment as a trainee at a nominal fee.

The Centre aims at providing intensive training with a personal touch to each and every trainee so as to make it result-oriented. — UNI
