Shivani is summer princess

White colour was the theme for summer princess contest held at Ivana Institute, here. The staff and students were dressed up in white outfits for the function.

A special lecture-cum-demonstration on skin care and make-up in summers was arranged by VLCC.

Ashwinder, centre manager of VLCC, addressed the students and spoke on the importance of sunscreen lotions and skin cleansing. She recommended that 20 glasses of water should be taken daily to have a glowing skin.

Judging the contest, Kamal Mohini, cooking expert of the town, shortlisted 10 students.

Shivani was declared summer princess. Ripneet Kaur and Arashpreet Kaur were the first and the second runners-up, respectively.

As many as 50 participants took part in the contest.

Poetry recitation

Amrit Indo-Canadian Academy, Ladian, today organised an inter-house English poetry recitation competition for students.

Students of different houses took part in the contest and presented poems based on various themes. The house in-charges judged the event.

The aim of the competition was to inculcate in students the ability to recite and enjoy poetic compositions.

Manvir Singh bagged the first prize, while Jaskiran Kaur and Ankita won the second and third prizes, respectively. The winners were awarded certificates.

The principal, Jaskiran Kaur, lauded the performances of the students and said such competitions infused confidence in them.

Singing competition

Tagore Public School, here, organised singing and poetry recitation competitions for its students today. Students of Classes I to V sang in chorus.

Classes II C and V B bagged the first prize while Classes I, II A and IIIC got the second prize. Classes II, I A and III A shared the third prize.

An inter-house solo song competition for Classes VI to VIII was organised by the junior humanities forum. Budding singers of the school mesmerised the audience with their rhythmic and melodious songs. Vishvjit Sharma bagged the first prize in the competition while Vishwas stood second. Amrita Jiwari and Anmol Passi shared the third place.

In another solo song competition organised by the senior humanities forum, Prashant Gogna stood first while Rupinderjeet Kaur and Surinder Kaur shared the second place. Dhanjeet Kaur stood third in the competition.

Principal Amrita Gakhar congratulated the upcoming talent and inspired them to achieve greater heights.

Rangoli competition

New Senior Secondary School organised an inter-house rangoli making competition for Classes III to XII here today. Director Ashok Kumar Setia, along with officiating principal Monika Sharma, judged the performance of the participants and gave away the prizes to the winners.

In primary block, Tagore House was the first and Nehru House was the runner-up while in the secondary block, Subhash House stood first and Laxmi Bai house was the runner-up.

Mothers Week at KVM

As a part of Mothers Week celebrations, Kundan Vidya Mandir (KVM), Civil Lines, on Saturday organised a meet wherein students of the middle section invited their mothers in order to express their gratitude for the love and care shown by them.

The function was presided over by school principal S.C. Saxena along with Sonia Verma, in-charge, middle section. Teachers greeted the mothers by presenting them rose buds and applying tilak on their foreheads. This was followed by a programme highlighting the role played by mothers. A prayer sung by Ritika was a real tribute to motherhood. A role play by Dr Manisha “Motherhood - A Challenge” and a skit “Let My Mother Know” depicting problems faced by teachers and students at school was thought provoking.

Dr Achla Gupta talked about health and care of a child explaining behavioural changes. “Mum Tum Aur Hum”, a game of questions, bringing out compatibility between mother and her child, was very enthusiastically played and Sapan Likhi, mother of Ranvir Likhi, turned out to be the winner.

The school principal emphasised that the positive role of a mother goes a long way in developing the personality of a child.

Kids have a field day

Chanda Mama School, here, organised a dance party for its tiny tots yesterday. Kids had come dressed as animals and birds. Their favourite cartoon characters like Pooh, Pluto, Tweety, Micky and Mini were there to give them company in merrymaking. Eatables completed the round of merry making.

Students honoured

Sacred Heart Convent School celebrated Institution Day here on Saturday at Ruby Jubilee Auditorium wherein students were honoured for achieving excellence in academics as well as in co-curricular activities. The programme began with a prayer dance. Students presented a skit “Compassionate Love”.

A report on the activities undertaken during the session 2006-07 was presented in an interesting manner using the techniques of drama and multimedia. This was followed by the prize distribution. Various trophies, scholarships and merit certificates for excellence in academics, sports and co-curricular activities were presented.

Those who had shown 100 per cent attendance in the session were also awarded merit certificates. The programme came to a conclusion with a beautiful fusion dance 'The Rising Glory of Sacred Heart' and bhangra.

Reverend Father Verghese Vinayanand L, Parish Priest of St Marx Mullankar Catholic Church, Ajit Nagar, was the chief guest.

Experts dwell on  mgmt challenges

The Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT) organized an international conference on the "Managementic challenges in the present era" here today.

In the inaugural session, Dr (Col) H. S. Singha welcomed the dignitaries and delegates from the industry and various educational institutions all over India and abroad. The participants had come from Chennai, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Ghaziabad, Greater Noida, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh.

They presented their research papers in the conference.

Scholars from the University of Australia and Canada also contributed for the research papers. Guiseppe Liberatore and Branda Thomson from Thompson-River University represented Canada.

Organising secretary Sandhya Mehta gave a brief introduction about the theme of conference.

Dr Deepak Tandon was the keynote speaker. He made a presentation on various issues, which are going to emerge and take a front seat in the management scenario. He discussed the key challenges for the managers of the present era with elaborate analysis of the challenges in the financial sector.

Priyank Bharti (IAS), additional deputy commissioner, was the chief guest on the occasion. He motivated the budding entrepreneurs/managers to equip themselves to face the challenges.

Prof Arvind Malhotra from the Shanti-Tara Group of Industries talked about the strengths and weaknesses of corporate India in meeting the outsourcing challenges.

Guiseppe Liberatore addressed the issue of sourcing competition between India and China and evaluated both the systems as separate economic and industrial models.

Priyank Bharti along with Dr Deepak Tandon and Guiseppe Liberatore released the souvenir of the conference.

As many as 50 delegates from various educational institutes and industry contributed their papers in the conference. Twenty papers each were presented in the two technical sessions held during the day.

The delegates presented papers on themes related to corporate governance, globalisation, Innovation and change, H.R Challenges, F. D.I. and retailing challenges, multi-channel marketing, segmental reporting, myths about leadership and its challenges, challenges for women managers, strategic outsourcing, challenges in IT, talent management etc.

Dr B.S. Bhatia, director, RIMT, Mandi Gobindgarh, chaired the first technical session. He talked about moral, ethical and business values as the biggest challenge in the modern era. He also emphasised on micro and macro-level issues related to managing change and innovation.

Prof R. K. Uppal chaired the second technical session. He brought forward issues related to HR retention, strategic management, impact of opening up of economy and growth of service sector economy as a challenge for marketers.

Dr. R.K. Uppal, Dr D.R. Singh and Dr Tandon conducted a panel discussion exploring various issues and challenges faced by corporate India and also brought in light the solutions to manage these challenges.

Dr (Col.) H.S. Singha concluded the conference by thanking the dignitaries and delegates and remarked that such conferences nurture both the academicians and industrialists.

They also provide exposure to the management students, he said.

GNIMT students excel

Nine MBA students of the Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology, Gujarkhan Campus, Model Town, Ludhiana, have made it to the merit list released by Punjab Technical University (PTU).

Megha Jain of MBA I topped the university with 90.25 per cent marks while Jaspreet Kaur (89.12 per cent) and Chanpreet Kaur (88.87 per cent) bagged
the second and third positions, respectively. In the same examination conducted in December, 2006, Swati Mehta (87.5 per cent) stood fifth while Preeti Kalsi (87.25 per cent) and Sumisha (86.62 per cent) bagged the seventh and ninth positions, respectively.

In the MBA III examination conducted by the university in December, 2006, Saloni Gupta secured the first position (89.75 per cent) while Parul Munjal (89.62 per cent) and Parul Bhandari (87.75 per cent) secured the second and fifth positions, respectively.

Dr H.S. Singha, director, GNIMT, congratulated the students as well as the faculty on their success.

Arya College is PCCTU poll venue

The elections for the district unit of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) scheduled for tomorrow at G.G.N.Khalsa College will be now held at Arya College.

Dr Manjit Singh Komal, president of the district PCCTU, said the elections would be held from 9 am to 3 pm. He said for the post of district president, Prof Rajinder Singh of G.G.N Khalsa College and Prof V.K.Bhardwaj of Arya College would contest the elections.

Kamal Sharma is PCCTU dist secy

Prof Kamal Sharma of A S College, Khanna, has been elected general secretary for Ludhiana district of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU).

His name was proposed by the Jagwant Brar group and he was elected to this office unopposed. He has been an active unionist throughout. 

Talking to this correspondent, Prof Kamal said he would make every possible effort to fight for the rights of the teachers and would try to get their demands like 95 per cent restoration of grant-in-aid, implementation of pension-cum-gratuity scheme, HRA for rural colleges, pay parity for DPIs and librarians and relaxation for refresher courses etc, met at the earliest.
