Twenty20 cricket
Minnows AIESCB upset ONGC
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 6
Medium pacer Basant Mohanty, who proved to be a wrecker (4 for 9), shattered the goal of hot contenders ONGC as the modest All-India Electricity Sports Control Board (AIESCB) snatched a stunning 16-run victory in the semi-final of the First All-India Prize Money Twenty20 Cricket Tournament. The tournament is being held at Sector 16 cricket stadium.

With this surprise victory, the AIESCB now have a chance to avenge their defeat at the hands of Professional Cricket Club in group B league programme. A 77-run partnership for the second wicket between Gurinder Saini (61) and Bageshwar Bisht (36) paved the way for an easy eight-wicket win over Himachal Cricket Club in the first semi-final match.

Chasing a target of 146 for victory, ONGC were sitting pretty till the 15th over. However, with the departure of opener Radheshyam Gupta (58, 7x4s), caught by Harikrishan Kali of Ikhlak Ahmad (1 for 28) at 113 for 3 in 16th over, came the turning point.

The powerful batting line-up of ONGC collapsed cheaply as they lost six wickets for just 24 runs. They could make 137 for 8 in 20 overs.

Basant Mohanty was adjudged the man of the match. From the other end, Ashok Dhinda (2 for 30) captured the wickets of Mohamed Saif (1) and Sumit Narwal (0).

Meanwhile, the semi-final between Professional Cricket Club and Himachal Cricket Club turned out to be virtually a one-sided affair as the former raced to an eight-wicket victory. Himachal CC batted first and stood 120 all out in 19.4 overs. Opener Kunal Sachdev top scored with 44. Himmat Singh contributed 25. Amit Kakria (2 for 7), Radhey (2 for 28) and Ramesh 2 for 17) were the successful bowlers for Professional CC.

The final will begin tomorrow at 12.30 pm. Punjab governor Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd), who is also UT Administrator, will be the chief guest.
