CID excavating near Vanzara’s home for remains of Kausar Bi

Ahmedabad, May 6
The police has started excavations at places around the house of arrested IPS officer D.G. Vanzara to trace the remains of Kausar Bi, wife of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, who was killed in a fake encounter.

A team headed by IG Geeta Johri, who is heading the probe into the killing of Sheikh and his wife, began the excavation amidst tight security at a farm owned by Vanzara close to his huge bungalow in his hometown of Ilol in Sabarkantha district of north Gujarat, police sources said here today.

The CID probe team is using an earth mover, manual equipment and labourers to dig up the area to trace any remains of Kausar Bi, who was killed shortly after Sheikh was gunned down in November 2005, they said.

This is a significant move as the CID has admitted in the Supreme Court that Kausar Bi is dead and her remains were believed to have been disposed of by policemen involved in Sheikh’s murder.

The CID team, now headed again by Johri after her junior, DIG Rajnish Rai, was asked to step down by the Gujarat government, has only three days to collect whatever evidence it can get from the ravines around Ilol and submit a report in the apex court as the extended police remand for the three IPS officials ends on May 8.

The team is also trying to ascertain if Kausar Bi was sexually assaulted while in custody. — PTI

Vanzara, Pandian suspended

Ahmedabad, May 6
The Gujarat government has suspended deputy inspector general of police (Border Range) D G Vanzara and SP (Operations) Rajkumar Pandian from service, following their arrest recently in connection with the killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in the 2005 fake encounter case.

The suspension orders were issued yesterday as per the rules laid down with the All-India Services, official sources said today.

These two officers, along with another IPS officer Dinesh Kumar of the Rajasthan police, had allegedly murdered Madhya Pradesh-based extortionist and suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) activist Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a fake encounter on November 26, 2005.

Meanwhile, a CID team, led by IGP (crime) Geeta Johari, reached Ilol village in Sabarkantha district today and started digging at suspected places to search for the remains of Kausarbi, wife of Sohrabbudin Sheikh, whose body was allegedly burnt after killing her. The police also conducted search operations at Vanzara's residence there, sources said.

Sheikh was allegedly gunned down on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on November 26, 2005. The police had picked up Sheikh and Kausarbi from Hyderabad on November 22.

The state government has already admitted before the Supreme Court that Kausarbi was killed and later her body was burnt in Ilol village.

The chief metropolitan magistrate yesterday extended the police custody of the three officers till May 8.

The investigating agency also sought the court's permission for conducting scientific tests on the officials to know the motive behind the kidnapping of Sheikh and his wife, and especially the cause of her death.

The court will hear the application moved by the prosecution in this regard on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, mediapersons were chased away by angry supporters of D G Vanzara today when they went to his native village Ilol to report on the digging works to recover remains of Kausarbi.

There was tension in the village, 100 km from here, when members of the Vanzara community targeted the mediapersons, who had landed in Ilol to cover the digging work done by Gujarat CID personnel days after the top cop was arrested, along with two other senior officers.

There were also reports that the supporters threatened the lives of the mediapersons if they did not leave the place. — UNI, PTI
