Research must reach farmers, says Kang

Ludhiana May 7
Addressing the state level extension review committee at Punjab Agricultural University today, vice-chancellor Dr M.S. Kang said research was of no use if the findings did not reach farmers.

"Our aim is to serve the farmers and all our efforts should be focused for the betterment of farmers".

Dr Kang said their extension and research activities were in line with the pattern followed by US colleges, which had proved successful over the years.

The director of research, Dr B.S. Dhillon, while presiding over the meeting informed that as per the reports received, wheat production this year would be less than that of previous year. — TNS

650 students get degrees on convocation

Ludhiana, May 7
Six hundred and fifty students of MA, PGDCA, BCA Hons., BCA, B.Com, BA Hons. and BA, were awarded degrees during the convocation and the annual prize distribution of Ramgarhia Girls college, here, today by the education minister of Punjab, Dr Bibi Upinderjit Kaur.

Hira Singh Gabria, minister for Tourism, Jails and Press and Stationery, was the guest of honour on the occasion.

The function took off by recital of the college shabad 'Dev shiva var mohe ihe' presented by students.

The inaugural address was given by Ranjodh Singh, president of Ramgarhia Education Council, and by principal Harmeet. The annual college report was read by the principal.

Bibi Upinderjit Kaur, in her address to students said in this scientific age, women need to come forward for their rights. She stressed that at the same time, girls need to recognise their duties, value for time and work hard to achieve something in life.

On this occasion actor/director Mangal Dhillon and educationist Prof Niranjan Tasneem were also honoured by the Ramgarhia Education Council.

Earlier, print of Nankana Sahib (at present in Pakistan) was released at the college by Gabria and Bibi Upinderjit Kaur.

The photograph, which was transformed into a poster was taken by Ranjodh Singh during a trip to the Nankana Sahib in March 2006.

Ranjodh Singh's dedication and efforts in bringing the holy image of the Nankana Sahib, the birth place of Sikhism, to the homes of common people were appreciated. The poster was available for free circulation.

MAAC-Cambridge varsity pact

The Maya Academy of Advanced Cinematic (MAAC), India's animation and visual effects institute, offering various courses in computer graphics, animation and special effects has tied up with the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE).

The University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) is part of Cambridge Assessment, a not-for-profit organisation and a department of the University of Cambridge. It is the world's largest provider of international qualifications for decades. Every year, millions of students are entered for CIE examinations.

According to Mr Amit Gupta, MAAC spokesperson here, following a successful evaluation of course material and assessments, CIE had agreed to validate MAAC's flagship AD3D and PD3D programmes. This process will involve continual monitoring by which CIE will ensure that quality standards were maintained and that students were provided with the most appropriate forms of assessment. CIE will also assure MAAC's academic systems, ensuring that administration met the expected standards of international best practice.

"Students who meet the programmes' assessment criteria and pass their award will receive a CE certificate, printed in Cambridge and bearing the logos of both MAAC and CE. This will give graduates a distinct edge when it comes to landing jobs with front line global companies or pursuing specialized courses overseas", he said.

English teachers attend workshop

The Oxford University Press, India organised a workshop for English teachers at GGN Public School, here, today. Teachers from various local schools, affiliated to the CBSE participated in the workshop.

The resource person, Jayshri Kannan, renowned French scholar and an instructor of liberal arts and social sciences, is a teacher educator. She conducts workshops for CBSE and NCERT and teaches communicative English and thrives to make the learner based teaching effective.

She said teaching should be child centred and not teacher centred. Emphasis should be given to teacher’s and student’s pronunciation. Groups should be formed to make a friendly atmosphere in the class, she added.

Parineeta, Yashul shine in poem recitation

A poem recitation competition in English and Hindi was organised for Class I & II in Kundan Vidya Mandir here today.

The guest of honour was Prof Shakuntala Srivastava, an eminent poet. For Class I, in English, Parineeta bagged the first prize, whereas second and third prizes were won by Yashul and Carol, respectively.

In Hindi, Samanyu bagged the first prize whereas second prize was shared by Taneesha and Vani, and third prize was won by Sanigdha.

In Class II in English, Vaibhav bagged the first prize, while the second and third prizes were won by Ruhani and Shubham, respectively. In Hindi, Chaahat bagged the first prize, while the second and third prizes were won by Bhavya and Yagnya, respectively.

Talent hunt

A talent hunt contest was held in GMT Public School here yesterday. The students showcased their talents in the form of dance, singing and dancing.

Prize distribution

Fun and excitement marked the annual prize distribution function for the kindergarten section of B.C.M Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, Ludhiana.

Dr R.T. Patil, director, Central Institute of Post-harvest Engg and Tech was the special guest.

The grand show witnessed a wide range of performances, including modelling, wherein students sashayed in rainbow colour dresses.

Nearly 280 excited tiny tots from nursery, LK G & UKG received their prizes.

Professor beating case: Accused seeks bail

Claiming himself to be innocent, a student of Arya College, Gurvinder Singh, alias Vicky, has moved an application in court seeking bail in the much talked about Prof Kamal Kishore beating case on the college campus.

He had reportedly stopped certain students from copying during an examination.

Taking cognisance of the bail application filed by the accused, the court of additional sessions judge Gurbir Singh today issued notice to the state for producing the records concerned on May 14.

It may be recalled that a case was registered against four unknown persons at Division No 8 police station on April 28 following an assault on Prof Kamal Kishore, who was superintendent, examinations, at Arya College. He was admitted to Dayanand Hospital. The teaching fraternity had condemned the incident.

In his bail application, the accused has stated that he was not involved in the incident. The police had raided his house. Apprehending arrest, he had moved an application before illaqa magistrate Manoj Singla on May 1. He was granted bail by the court under section 323, 353 and 186 of the IPC, but he could not furnish the bail bonds and was sent to judicial custody.

Next day, the police moved an application before the court that he was also wanted under section 333 of the IPC. Thereafter, the judge issued production warrants. He was produced in the court and formerly arrested.

City Centre scam
Warrants against Capt Rajesh withdrawn

Ludhiana, May 7
Judicial magistrate Kuldeep Singh today ordered the withdrawal of the arrest warrants issued against Capt Rajesh Singh, one of the accused in the City Centre scam case.

The orders were issued following an application moved by the counsel for the accused. He had submitted in writing that Justice Nawab Singh of the Punjab and Haryana High Court had granted an interim bail to the accused. But the vigilance bureau took the arrest warrants thereafter. The accused apprehended harassment if the arrest warrants issued by the court were not withdrawn.

Capt Rajesh had moved an anticipatory bail application before the high court after additional sessions judge, Ludhiana, Gurbir Singh had dismissed his bail plea.
