Shankar secures trophy for Satluj

A magnificent knock of 80 runs by skipper Shankar Nair with valuable contribution from bowlers Neeraj Joshi (3 for 30) and Sandeep (2 for 21) enabled Satluj Cricket Coaching Centre, Sector 4, Panchkula, to beat DAV Model School, Sector 15, Chandigarh, 6 runs in the finals of the Satluj Hot Weather u-17 cricket tournament. The tournament was played at Satluj Public School, Sector 4, here, today.

Satluj won the toss and elected to bat first. They scored 173 in 19.3 overs. Shankar Nair scored fruitful innings of 80 runs for his team. Neeraj Joshi also contributed 35 runs to his team’s total. Nehchal Bhardwaj scored 26 vital runs.

On the other hand, Parteek and Saransh of the DAV team bowled well for their school and took three wickets each, conceding 32 and 20 runs, respectively.

While chasing the target, the DAV team fell short of the target by just 6 runs. The match was stiff till the last bowl of the innings. Rozal Batra of DAV scored 51 runs but his innings were in vain as his team could not win the match.

Shankar Nair was declared the “Man of the Match” and also got the “Best Batsman” tag. Parteek (DAV) was the “Best Bowler.” The “Best Wicket-keeper Bastman” title went to Kunal Mahajan(DAV) while Rozal Batra (DAV) went home with the “Player of the Tournament” award.

Mumbai’s Mishab scripts city team’s defeat

DAV School, Chandigarh, could not prevail over Rizvi Springfield (Mumbai) in the Parle Champions Trophy Cricket Tournament for u-17 boys, played at the Bharath Nagar Cricket Stadium, Delhi, today.

After their second team suffered humiliation against Salwan Boys (Delhi) in their final league game, Rizvi got all their top players back in the fray to play the crucial tie against DAV School (Chandigarh). Rizvi won the toss and elected to bat. Their innings was bundled out for 167 in 43.3 overs.

DAV School openers took to the field, knowing that if they could get off to a good start, then the game would be half won. The batsmen seemed to struggle under the pressure and apart from Vikrant Bansal, none of the other batsmen got off to a good start. Bansal was left to fend for himself and was knocked over for 28.

Rizvi’s Mishab Hussain and Altamash Mulla together triggered off the collapse of the city’s team as the two spinners foxed DAV School’s batsmen. The duo accounted for seven of the ten wickets with Hussain taking four while Mulla took three wickets. DAV fell short by 20 runs to handover Rizvis a final’s berth.

Rizvi Springfield: 167 all out in 43.3 overs - Mishab Hussain 26, Prathamesh Nerkar 20, Vaibhav 2 for 30, Arjit Gupta 1 for 24

586 attend coaching camps

As many as 586 sub-junior and junior boys and girls are attending annual summer coaching camps in different disciplines at various coaching centres run by the Chandigarh sports department. The camps began on Monday and will continue till May 24.

Around 18 athletes are attending a camp at Sports Complex in Sector 46 under the supervision of Iqbal Singh. Sarabjit Singh is imparting training to 12 athletes at the Sports Complex in Sector 7. Satish Bhatia is in charge of 20 players (boys and girls) at a badminton camp at the Sector 42 Sports Complex. Darshan Singh is looking after the wrestling camp for 15 trainees at the Sector 42 Sports Complex.

Joint director sports J.P.S. Sidhu has directed the coaches to submit reports of the camps to the district sports officer latest by May 28. A three-member committee, comprising of DSO S.K. Joshi, in charge youth affairs and section officer Partap Singh, was constitutes to check the daily attendance, training schedules and refreshment.

Camps are being held in the following disciplines:

Athletics at Sports Complex - 46 and Sports Complex - 7; badminton at the Sector 42 Sports Complex; basketball at Sports Complex - 46, St Joseph’s School - 44 and Sports Complex-7; boxing at the Sector 42 Sports Complex; cricket at the Sector 16 Stadium and St John’s School-26; cycling at Lake Sports Complex; gymnastics at Sports Complex - 7 and MRS School - 27; hockey at the Sector 18 Hockey Stadium and GMSSS-44; handball at DAVSSS-8, GMSSS-23, Sports Complex - 42 and GMSSS - 21; judo at the Sector 42 Sports Complex; kabaddi at the Sector 42 Sports Complex; kho-kho at GHS-32; lawn tennis at Lake Sports Complex; rowing at Lake Sports Complex; swimming at Nursery Swimming Pool - 23; squash at the Lake Sports Complex; skating at the Sector 10 Skating Rink; table tennis at the Sector 23 TT Hall and MRA-27; volleyball at the Sector 7 Sports Complex; wrestling at the Sector 42 Sports Complex and weightlifting at the Sector 42 Sports Complex.

Snooker: Ajay beats Vaneet 2-0

Ajay Singla grabbed the first two frames straightway defeating Vaneet Khosla 2-0 in the best of three frames snooker match at the sixth Saurabh Khattar Memorial Billiards and Snooker Championship, held at Chandigarh Club, here, today.

Ajay grabbed the first frame at a score of 79-34 and the second one at 57-27. In another tie, G.S. Batra got the better of Gurvinder Singh in a thrilling encounter. Batra clinched the first frame at a credible margin of 61-19. Gurvinder came back and put the second frame in his name with a convincing margin of 60-30, but had to give up in the third set for 21-52. The final score read 61-19, 3-60 and 52-21, in favour of Batra.

In another match, Anadit Joshi beat Mukesh Chopra 2-0. The score stood at 69-59, 55-42. Dapinder Singh moved ahead beating K.S. Nalwa 2-0 (43-34, 38-27). Vishal Gupta simply outclassed Chandan Sidhu with a one-sided encounter. Vishal grabbed the two frames with a massive lead of 77-27, 80-07.

Sandeep Chadha and Mahesh Chaudhary too went ahead beating their opponents with mammoth margins. Sandeep beat Lali 2-0 (68-17, 79-19) and Mahesh thrashed Bali 2-0 (82-14, 52-46).

Cricket trials today

Chandigarh, May 8
Trials for the selection of the u-13 years cricket team of the Mohali Cricket Association, affiliated with the Punjab Cricket Association, will be held tomorrow at 3 pm at the PCA Cricket Stadium, C-ground, Mohali.

The selected team will take part in the u-13 inter-district tournament organised by the Punjab Cricket Association. Players, either studying or living in Mohali, are eligible for the trials.

The players must be less than 13 years as on September 1, 2007 (i.e., a player must be born on or after September 1, 1994). The players must bring a photocopy of their birth certificate or a certificate from the respective institute confirming their date of birth.

Football

Sanjay Public School Football Academy, Sector 44, is conducting trials in the school premises tomorrow at 10 am. The selection will be made for u-17 and u-19 age groups. The selected players will be given sports kits and free education. Interested players should bring their original certificates at the time of trials.

Baseball

The Baseball Association, Chandigarh, is conducting trials for boys and girls for their coaching camp at Punjab Engineering College, Sector 12, here, tomorrow at 4 pm.

The selected team will participate in the sub-junior national baseball championship scheduled to be held at Indore from May 22 to 27.

Skating carnival from May 12

Doon Public School, Sector-21, Panchkula, is organising its 1st Doon Skating Carnival for children of the tricity on May 12 and 13.

The highlight of the carnival will be speed skating. It is open to children of all age groups, i.e., from four years to 16 years. The Doon Skating Carnival is going to be an annual feature of the school. “The aim is to promote this sport among children. That is why, in this carnival, beginners will get a chance to participate with seasoned skaters,” informed skating coach Chander.

Naveen, Himal, Ajay lead in chess tourney

Naveen Bansal, Himal Gusain and Ajay Jaswal were leading at 5 points at the end of the sixth round of the 18th Chandigarh Chess Championship 2007. The meet is being held at St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, here.

Anil Raina, Abhinandan Vohra and Swapan Kumar were close behind the leaders at 4 ˝ points. Fifty local players are participating in this championship.

Four players from the men’s category and an equal number of players from the women’s category will be selected to represent Chandigarh in the nationals being held at Dindigul (Tamil Nadu) and Hyderabad.

Chandigarh Wrestling Association releases calendar

The Chandigarh Wrestling Association has prepared its sports calendar for 2007-2008.

In the calendar, the Sub-Junior Boys State Wrestling Championships (freestyle and Greco-Roman) has been slated to be held from May 19 to 20 at the Sector 30 Labour Hall here. Releasing the calendar, the association’s general secretary, Darshan Lal Sharma, said a number of coaching camps had been planned to prepare the Chandigarh teams for the National Wrestling Championships and other important tournaments.

The association will select probables for a coaching camp to prepare the state team for the sub-junior nationals to be held in Anandpur Sahib from May 25 to 27.

CIC stays fine on officer

Chandigarh, May 8
The Central Information Commission (CIC) has stayed a fine of Rs 25,000 imposed on Satya Thakur, a public information officer of the Estate Office, for delay in providing information to Mehar Singh, a local resident, under the Right to Information Act.

The under secretary has made a representation to the Central Information Commission, saying that she had acted as per provisions of the Act under section 5(4).

An official communication to the joint secretary (vigilance) of the Union Territory said the recovery of penalty amount “be put on hold” till the matter was being looked into.
