Finding himself unable to repay his debt, Prem Singh (50) of Chhapri Sahib village, about 20 km from here, allegedly committed suicide today. Prem shot himself dead with his .12-bore rifle. The Goindwal police has registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC.
Prem had taken a loan of Rs 1 lakh from Cooperative Agriculture Bank besides other loans from certain financial institutions. His son, Satnam Singh, who was in the Army, was killed in action in 2005. Since then, Prem had been living under depression.
He had tried to get his second son recruited in the Army, but in vain. Members of his family said when Prem woke up in the morning he was feeling uneasiness. At about 8 am, he went into a room of the house and shot himself dead.
