Honing communication skills
Chandigarh, May 10 A large number of qualified Punjabi boys and girls, especially those coming from rural areas, fail to get jobs because of their poor communication skills. Realising the problem, the Mehar Baba Charitable Trust has set up a learning centre at Bassi Pathana, near here. The trust, patronised by H.S. Mejie, who did his degree in engineering from Pilani and later MTech from the Indian Institute of Technology at Khargpur in the early 50s, has set up a modern computer centre to teach communication skills to students. Already, five batches have gone through the learning process. The focus is on correct pronunciation, on formation and speaking of sentences correctly and on conversing fluently. A software has been loaded in computers that first records what is spoken and then indicates how much of it was correct. Without much difficulty, students can learn the correct pronunciation. The trust is keen on setting up such a centre at Pehowa. The deputy commissioner of Fatehgarh Sahib had recently approached Mejie to start a similar course in two government schools of his choice at or near Bassi Pathana. Besides running a learning centre, the trust also focuses on organising agri-clinics and conducts workshops for farmers and women. |
