Lakhowal remains a farmer at heart

Ludhiana May 11
For Ajmer Singh Lakhowal, president of the Bhartiya Kisan Union, nothing has changed much after becoming the chairman of the Punjab Mandi Board. The fiery kisan neta continues to remain a kisan.

He has not given up the BKU badge that he wears even while presiding over the official functions and meetings. He believes that he will always remain a kisan to the core irrespective of the responsibility he holds. And that probably explains his proactive approach in "fighting the evil of corruption within the system" of which he now happens to be an integral part. Recently he exposed a "multi-crore wheat subsidy scandal" after leading raids on two food processing units.

The chairmanship of the Punjab Mandi Board, he asserts, is a temporary affair. "But it is an important responsibility", he remarked. Whether the evasion of the mandi fee by the sharks or the modernisation of  mandis, he has been giving a thought to everything.

Lakhowal may wear a thoroughly peasant look. Not many people know that he holds a masters degree in mathematics from the prestigious Government College, Ludhiana. He is as articulate in English as he happens to be in Punjabi. He speaks as much at ease with the senior bureaucrats as the ordinary farmers, whom he represents and among whom he spends most of his time.

He has not given up the proactive approach to the farmers' problems. On May 22 he would be leading a farmers' demonstration in front of the Prime Minister's residence in New Delhi to highlight various issues like minimum support price for paddy, incentives to farmers to curb suicides and stop to the forced acquisition of land.

While discharging his duties as the Mandi Board Chairman, he keeps on meeting the farmers to inquire about their problems.
