Experts deliberate on challenges, opportunities in service sector
Ludhiana, May 12 The conference began on a religious note with students of the host college seeking the blessing of almighty through recitation of shabad gayan. Dr S P Singh, former vice-chancellor, GNDU, welcomed the dignitaries representing leading industrial houses and educational institutions from all over India. Manmohan Singh Kapur, former CMD, Vijaya Bank, delivered the inaugural address and said it is the right time to discuss the service sector as it is growing at the rate of 11 per cent per annum and is an area of national interest. The chief guest on the occasion, Bikramjit Singh Khalsa, chief parliamentary secretary gave the presidential remark. Anoop Verma from Country Head-Advent, Singapore, was the key note speaker. He made a presentation on various challenges, which are going to emerge in the near future and take a front seat in management scenario. He said, “One weapon that we Indians have is, our English speaking ability and it can be well utilised against countries like China.” Director of the institute, Kuldip Singh thanked the distinguished guests for sharing their ideas on the topic and laying a strong foundation for the conference. As many as 50 delegates from Delhi, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Bangalore, etc contributed various papers to the conference, out of which 20 were presented during the two technical sessions. The delegates presented papers on themes related to health care, entertainment, tourism, BPOs, insurance, training and development, service quality in banks, IT-enabled service, etc . Dr R. Ravi Kumar, professor HR , IIM- Bangalore, chaired the first technical session. He cited numerous examples of famous Indian businessmen and said most of the biggest corporates in India today, made a humble beginning and started off with small business establishments. However, later on in their lives, they achieved phenomenal success. Dr Birender Nath Singh, MBA, Ph.D from IIT, Kharagpur chaired the second technical session. Professor K K Uppal from University Business School, Punjab University chaired the valedictory session and discussed various issues and challenges faced by corporate India and also brought in light, solutions to meet these challenges. Gunwant Singh Dua, co-ordinator, concluded the conference by expressing his gratitude to the dignitaries and delegates who made the conference a success and remarked that such conferences were excellent platforms for interaction between industries and institutions. |

CMC nod to courses for HP students
Ludhiana, May 12 It has given its approval looking at the health needs of the remote rural areas of Himachal Pradesh and the need to train people of Himachal Pradesh in the field of health care. In the first year the courses would be offered for hospital assistant's course in Radiography (X-ray), dental chair assistant, nursing assistant, ophthalmic technology, laboratory, orthopaedic assistant, operation theatre and special nursing subjects. The CMC is going to extend its cooperation in drafting the syllabi and train the faculty members and also examining body for these courses. The college is also going to help in the interview and selection procedures and fee structure for the first academic year 2007-08. A delegation from Jai Maa Ashram and Mata ManMohan Kaur Memorial Charitable Hospital was in Ludhiana recently to express its gratitude to the CMC for extending the existing educational facilities for the people of Himachal at the Ashram to include certain paramedical disciplines. The delegation was headed by Baba Faqir Chand, founder of the ashram in the lap of Shivalik hills. The ashram is providing quality educational facilities to remote areas of Himachal Pradesh. These facilities include a degree college, a B. Ed. college, technical college, Sanskrit college, besides a senior secondary school. |

Seminar on drug addiction held
Ludhiana, May 12 The seminar was held at Government Senior Secondary School for Boys, Sahnewal. Students of many schools had attended the seminar. Ramesh Kumar, president of Municipal Council, Sahnewal, said the drug addiction has become prolific in the state. This drug addiction is ruining our state in all its aspects, be it social or financial. We have to work hard to stop it. SMO, Sahnewal, S.S. Dhir, said the government abets in selling alcohol as it gets roughly income of Rs 6000 crores. But the survey says that people drinking alcohol spend around Rs 27,000 crores on medicines for the diseases that they contract drinking alcohol. Vajinder Singh, the secretary of the society, said the society has been actively involved in making youth aware of ill effects of drugs and from time to time has been holding seminars and releasing posters. |

SIFTIANs showcase their talent
Ludhiana, May 12 The students presented a number of cultural programmes besides displaying their creations created during the course of their study. The function was presided over by Raj Avasthi,
chairman of Sportking Group of Industries. The students presented salsa dance, fusion dance, solo dance items, song sequences, rock band, comedy play, and bhangra. The students even walked down the ramp. The judges for the fashion show were Divya Oswal from the Malwa Group, Preeti Thapar from Sumeet Exports. The awards were distributed by Kalia to the outstanding students in academics and other co-curricular activities. He lauded the coordination and the efforts put up by the students. Inter-school declamation contest
Ludhiana, May 12 Fourteen schools from various towns took part in this contest with a team of two students from each school. The chief guest Sanjeev Kalra, IG, Jalandhar Zone, gave away prizes to the winners. Gautam Cheema, SSP, Khanna was the guest of honour. The results are as follows : Krishna Sood and Guntasha Gill of Guru Nanak International School won the first and second prizes, respectively, whereas, Gurleen Kaur of GNPS, Ludhiana, won third prize. BCM School celebrated Mothers Day, here, today, to pay tribute to selfless spirit of mothers. Students prepared motley of items for their mothers during activity periods. The senior students were taught recipes to make breakfast so that they could surprise their mothers by serving them breakfast in bed. The celebrations concluded with a fun bonanza when mothers, teachers and children enjoyed playing games and complimented their mothers.
