Guwahati, May 15
Suspected militants belonging to the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) today shot dead a 60-year-old grocery wholesale dealer Babulal Shah at Borhat town in Sivasagar district and injured his son Ashok Shah even as there was an unconfirmed report of killing of five Hindi-speaking people at Belbari under Tengakhat police station in Dibrugarh district of the state.
Sivasagar district Superintendent of Police, Shyamol Saikia informed that four armed youths suspected to be members of the banned ULFA, went to Babulal Shah’s house at Borhat town, about 87 kilometre away from the district headquarters and opened indiscriminate fire at around 6-15 p.m today.
Babulal Shah died on the spot while his son Ashok Shah was seriously injured and rushed to Assam Medical College Hospital in Dibrugarh. A team of policemen and the Army was rushed from the district headquarters to Borhat.
Meanwhile, five Hindi-speaking persons were feared killed in an attack by suspected ULFA militants at Belbari (Kathalani) under Tengakhat police station in Dibrugarh district this evening.
A police team rushed to the spot on hearing about the incident. However, police was yet to confirm the number of deaths due to the incident as Dibrugarh district SP was still awaiting report from the police team till the filing of this report.
A senior leader of the banned ULFA’s 28th battalion, Prabal Neog called up some media persons earlier in the day warning that a series of attacks was likely to be carried out in eastern Assam districts.
The ULFA had killed over 70 Hindi-speaking innocent people in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts in January this year.
