Following an upswing in the petroleum industry in India and the need to have locally groomed experts, top oil exploration companies are looking to hire fresh graduates and starting a specialised course in the Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) at Vadodara.
Showing keen interest in hiring fresh graduates of the Geology Department at the MSU, officials of the Director-General of Hydrocarbons in New Delhi have interviewed and shortlisted seven candidates, a senior professor of the department said in Ahmedabad recently.
This is for the first time that a department in the oil exploration sector of the country and also ONGC, the biggest public sector unit, have taken such a step.
"The boom in the oil and petroleum sector in the country has created a demand for geologists and that too fresh graduates. The DG of Hydrocarbons has already shown keen interest. The ONGC is already in the MSU campus to begin a course for the next semester", Dr K.C. Tiwari, head of the Geology Department of MSU, said.
The aim behind this talent hunt in this extremely technical field is to have as much young spirit in the budding sector and also to prevent fresh graduates from being lured by prospects of working abroad in the same area, the professor said.
A two-year course on petroleum geology will begin next year for the first time in the history of the MSU. This will happen with the assistance of experts from the ONGC, the senior geologist said.
For the maiden course on petroleum geology, the faculty will comprise 50 per cent staff of experts from ONGC, who will help set up a high-tech laboratory and also provide all computer software required, he said.
Regarding the upcoming course, he said that initially the intake would be 2-25 students and the faculty will decide to increase or decrease the seats, depending on the experience of the first year.
The professor said apart from PSUs, private petroleum companies in the country like Reliance Petroleum are also keen to conduct campus interviews in the near future.
