Sanam Singh advances to second round

It was a mixed day for Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) trainees. Its former trainees Tushar Liberhan and Sanam Singh advanced to the next round but wild card entrants Vijayant Malik and Kinshuk Sharma lost their matches in the ongoing $10,000+ Hospitality SAIL ITF Men's Futures at the CLTA courts, Sector 10, here today.

In a marathon two hours and 15 minutes match, the 1020th ranked Sanam Singh beat local talent Vijayant Malik 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2 while Navdeep Singh outplayed Kinshuk Sharma in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.

Riding high on marvelous groundstrokes and returns, Sanam did not give any chance to Vijayant after losing the first set 6-7(5). The highlight of the set was a record number of 30 points played in the 12th game with Sanam serving to make it 6-all but in the tie-breaker, Vijayant won 7-5 to take 1-0 lead.

After that Sanam discovered the weak points of Vijayant to win the next two sets 6-3 and 6-2.

Another CLTA product Tushar Liberhan got the better of Kiran Nandkumar (India) 6-2, 6-3 to move up to the second round.

Coming back into form after losing the first set 0-6, fourth-seeded Vijay Kannan ended the challenge of wild card Srirambalaji Narayanaswamy in the first round of the singles category. The final score was 0-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4.

Tomorrow, in the first-round singles matches, Amritraj cousins will be seen in action. Prakash Amritraj will take on Jonathan Kinsella of Britain and Stephen Amritraj will meet another Briton Andrew Fitzpatrick.

Wushu Meet
Thoibi, Samathoibi of Manipur strike gold

P. Thoibi Devi and A. Samathoibi Chanu, both of Manipur, won gold medals in the Daoshu and Nandao for girls, respectively, in the 7 th IndianOil Junior National Wushu Championships being conducted by the Chandigarh Wushu Association at the Sector 10 Rink Hall, here today.

Manu of Rajasthan gave an outstanding performance to win gold in the Jianshu for girls and pushed favourite Kh Bidyashwari Chanu of Manipur to the second spot.

L. Sanatombi Chanu of Assam displayed her skill and was declared the first position holder in Taijijian for girls.

In Taolu (Daoshu) for boys, Prakash Singh of Uttar Pradesh captured gold. L. Ratan Singh of Manipur bagged a silver medal.

Mustard defeat Red to enter cricket semis

Chandigarh, May 28
A close encounter marked the second day of the SJOBA Super 7's Night Cricket Tournament under way at the Sector 26 St. John's High School ground last night.

In the first match in Pool B, Mustard team defeated Red team by 4 wickets. Red batted first and scored 40 runs. For Mustard, Anurag Chopra and Rohan took 2 wickets each. Harit Sharma of Mustard played a flawless innings of 22 runs to take his side to victory.

The second match saw Black and Green teams in Pool A. Black batted first and scored 63 runs. The Green team batsmen chased well but failed to finish it off. For Black, Aditya Goel and Arjun Behl took one wicket each and for Green Gauhar Pruthi scored 24 runs while Gaurav took 3 wickets.

The third match was played between the teams of Dark Blue and Light Blue. Light Blue batted first, but could score only 47 runs. The chase for Dark Blue looked easy but they lost 2 wickets in the first over itself. Thereafter, Vyas Bhandari and Umang Sethi steadied the innings, but the asking rate continued to rise. Finally, Dark Blue managed to score a victory in the last over with 3 balls to spare. Umang Sethi took 2 wickets and scored 10 runs. Vyas Bhandari scored an unbeaten 14.

In the last match, Orange team played against Lemon in a keenly contested match that was eventually won by the latter. Lemon scored 67 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. The captain, Aman Tandon, played a great knock of 37 runs and took 3 wickets and for Orange team, Aman Bahri scored 37 runs.

From Pool B, Mustard and Dark Blue have entered the semifinals and from pool A Black has secured a place in the final four.

The final round of the Pool matches will be played on June 2, followed by finals on June 3.

Golf camp for children today

Chandigarh, May 28
The Chandigarh Golf Club will open its greens to tap talent among non-members at a six-day junior camp from May 29 to June 3.

The camp will be held under Ajay Gujral who has received training under the European Golf Teachers Federation.

The brain behind this camp is new course captain Sukhjit Singh Lehal.

Boys and girls of Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, in the 7-14 age-group will be given training in the basics of golf.

According to coach Ajay Gujral, each participant will be given a complimentary copy of important golf magazines to enhance their interest in the game.

The performance of each player will be reviewed after the completion of the camp.

City wrestlers win 11 medals

Chandigarh wrestlers won 11 medals, including two golds, in the 26th Boys’ and 10th Girls’ Sub-Junior National Wrestling Championship, under way at Anandpur Sahib.

Priyanka (46 kg girls’ freestyle) and Sandeep (50 kg boys’ freestyle) won gold medals.

The silver medallists in the boys’ category were Satinder (42 kg boys’ freestyle), Pardeep (63 kg, Greco-Roman), Mandeep (50 kg, Greco-Roman), Deepak (58 kg Greco-Roman), Sandeep (54 kg, Greco-Roman) and Surjit (69 kg Greco-Roman) while in the girls’ category, Jyoti (49 kg), Sonika (60 kg freestyle) and Niki (65 kg, freestyle) got silver medals.

CFA players excel

Chandigarh Football Academy (CFA) players showed their skills on foreign soil defeating a leading football club of Leipzig 3-0 in an exhibition match played at Leipzig in Germany today.

The match was held on an artificial turf in an indoor stadium. The CFA players have gone to Leipzig for a 15-day training camp.
