College staff stage dharna
Chandigarh, June 1 Prof Rupinder Chatha, secretary, Chandigarh District Council, said the union would not withdraw its agitation till the just dues of the employees were given to them. Prof Anil Sarwal, president, DAV College Teachers’ Union, said the management had deeply hurt the sentiments of all employees of the two colleges. “The management which is basking in the glory of the hard work put in by the employees is denying them even the legitimate dues and has completely failed to address their grievances,” he added. R.K. Anand, union secretary, warned the management that they should desist from taking an anti-employee stance that would damage the college and jeopardise the ensuing academic session. Prof R.P. Singh, member, governing body of the DAV College, Chandigarh, exhorted the vice-chancellor and the DPI to go ahead with their programme of imposing penalties on the college managements if they did not fulfil the statutory conditions laid down in the calendar. Both leaders of the teaching and non-teaching staff of the two colleges reiterated their resolve to fight till their dues were given to them. Among others who spoke were Prof Uma Joshi, Prof Avanindra Chopra, Prof Neelima, Prof Ghanshyam Dev, Prof Rajesh Sharma, Som Nath and Vinod Kumar. |

College students get farewell
Mohali, June 1 Miss and Mr 2003 contest was held wherein Vineet Saini and Zoravar Sahi walked away with the Ms and Mr 2003 titles, respectively. While the crowns for Ms Personality and Mr Personality were bagged by Poonam Negi and Sagar Vyas, respectively, Swati and Mohit Sharma were adjudged Ms and Mr Charming.

120 PRTs complete in-service training
Chandigarh, June 1 Dr K.S. Saluja, principal, Government College, Sector 46, who was the chief guest, presented certificates to the teachers for successfully completing the 15-day training programme. Dr Saluja said, “Such orientation programmes go a long way in galvanising teachers’ skills in teaching for betterment of the taught.” He called upon the teachers to keep the doors of learning ever open and seize the opportunity to attend such orientation programmes to brush up their knowledge. K.L. Sodhi, director, State Institute of Education, said the training programme aimed at enabling the teachers to handle the course content of the changed syllabi. |

New courses introduced
Chandigarh, June 1 In order to cater to the future career trends, the college is offering some new courses, including MSc
(bioinformatics and biotechnology), in the upcoming academic session. The courses will be offered as elective subjects in BSc besides being offered as honours courses. Information Technology (IT) will be offered to both BA and BSc students as an elective subject. Besides the existing seats, additional 70 seats will be available for admission to BCA and B.Com.

Computer teachers protest
Chandigarh, June 1 The teachers were protesting against being asked to work during the summer vacations. The union members said they were being exploited even in the vacations. While announcing that the teachers would not do clerical work, the union also demanded the withdrawal of the decision with immediate effect. The members also marched up to Piccadily Chowk and gave a MoU to the authorities.
