Chandigarh, June 3
A summer literacy programme for over 43 illiterate migrant workers is being organised from May 28 to July 16. The labourers were motivated by the support of the SDO, the JE and the foreman who will spare them time for literacy classes after five. Most of the workers belong to Jharkhand, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.
The objective is to make the migrants functionally literate and aware of their well being. The teaching-learning material, prepared by the RRC, has been supplied to them. Student volunteers Satbir, Ashish Gupta and Manpreet Singh are from Guru Gobind Singh College and DAV College, respectively. Suman and Neelam from the UT administration will help in teaching, reading and writing.
During the course, awareness on family health, HIV/AIDS, female foeticide, drugs and gender equity will also be given. Director Manjeet Paintal and project officer Dr Anuradha Sharma, RRC, Panjab University, Chandigarh, is facilitating the resource support for the educational programme.
