More than 100 children examined
Our Correspondent

Mandi Ahmedgarh, June 3
Terming unawareness about the importance of various nutrients and their deficiency among children, a team of doctors urged the parents to consult dieticians before preparing menu for daily diet. Poor personal hygiene and community health services were cited as other factors causing illness among children.

Rajiv Sood and Ashish Jindal, both pediatricians, said majority of parents lacked knowledge about the significance of various constituents of balanced diet. Besides causing deficiency diseases, the trend resulted in fall in immunity and consequent increased vulnerability to ailments.

While talking to Ludhiana Tribune after examining more than 100 children at a camp organised by the Rotary Club at Sood Hospital here, the pediatricians said Punjabi mothers had been found to start supplementary diet to their children very late.

“While a child should normally be given supplementary died after about four months of his birth, the mothers continue depriving him or her of necessary constituents of diet for more than one year,” said Sood. He held that even milk was not a complete diet for the children.

Anemia, kwashiorkor, marasmus and rickets were cited as major deficiency diseases that decreased immunity and resulted in increased incidence of gastroenteritis, jaundice and dysentery.

The organisers provided free medical to the patients.

Pardeep Sharda and Narinder Gogna, both district committee members, Satish Jain, president, and S.P. Sofat were present, among others.
