CMCH conducts camp at central jail

Ludhiana, June 4
As a part of its social welfare services, the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) organised an eye and dental check up camp for the inmates of the central jail, on Tajpur Road here today in association with Bharatiya Social Welfare Society and Operation Blessings India.

Two teams of doctors, led by Dr Harmunish Mann and Dr Sandhya from the Christian Dental College, along with Dr Rupali Chopra and Dr Ommen from the eye department of CMCH, examined jail inmates.

As many as 500 inmates benefited from the dental checkup. Various dental services including cleaning, filling and extraction of badly decayed teeth, were provide free of cost.

Dr Mann also gave tips on dental health to inmates.

The dental team will make a follow up visit on July 3 and another round of the Central Jail visit after six months.

The ophthalmology team checked more than 150 patients and prescribed medicines to those in need of treatment. Some of the inmates were referred for eye surgery. All those in need of spectacles, were also examined.

Lauding this initiative, the jail superintendent Kuldeep Singh expressed appreciation towards these services rendered by the CMCH teams.

“The inmates can not be taken out for routine medical checkups due to security concerns and such camps help the jail authorities in a big way,” he said.

Local boys win national badminton

Ludhiana, June 4
Local lads, Raj Kumar and Pranav Chopra, have made the city proud with their stupendous performance to clinch the title in the Krishna Khiatan Memorial All India Junior Badminton Major Ranking Tournament held at Chennai from May 26 to 31.

This was stated by honorary general secretary of Ludhiana District Badminton Association, Anupam Kumaria.

In the final, the duo overcame a stiff challenge put up by Naresh from Andhra Pradesh and Anurag Thakkar from Madhya Pradesh.

The local shuttlers lost the first set 16-21 but found their rhythm in the next one.

After some initial hiccups they went on to win it 21-14.

They won the third set 21-9 to win the championship.

Both these boys have already been selected for the preparatory camp for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games slated to be held in New Delhi in 2010. The LDBA would felicitate these promising shuttlers, said Kumaria.

PSEB officials remove kundi connections

Officials of the Punjab State Electricity Board today conducted raids on slums in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar area and removed illegal connections of slum dwellers here this afternoon.

Supported by a heavy posse of police, a squad of PSEB swooped on slums and confiscated all private poles and electric wires despite protests by the dwellers.

The action comes in the wake of a Tribune report highlighting the power theft by jhuggi dwellers. The news report had stated that the slums were blatantly drawing power through kundi connections.
