“Media education must evolve”

Media is a field full challenges as well as choices, says Prof B.K.Kuthiala, Chairman, Institute of Mass Communication and Media Technology, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra. Excerpts from an interview:

What are the challenges before media education in the country?

Media education has to evolve in accordance with the rapidly changing face and functioning of the media. Some change is visible, but the pace of transformation is slow. The educational institutions as well as the UGC should also keep pace with the changing times and accept the present-day challenges.

Which media courses are the most in vogue?

The hot courses are specialised ones in the electronic media and convergent journalism, including web media and Internet journalism. Then, there are graphic art and animation. The courses in advertising, public relations and corporate communication are also popular and promising.

What is the future of media professionals?

The media will require a large number of trained professionals in the years to come. Although there is exploitation at the initial stage, this is an era of specialisation and only the best will survive.
