Sexual Assault Case Chandigarh, June 6 According to sources, the counsel had cited certain irregularities in the conduct of the trial, which, he contended, made it difficult to discharge his duties and defend the accused effectively. Similar claims were made by the defending officer earlier and he had written to the convening authority several days ago, but a reply is still awaited. The counsel has also written to the authority over the matter and has sought an interview with the General Officer Commanding, 15 Infantry Division. Sources said the counsel had claimed that the contentions and submissions of the defence were not being recorded as warranted. Inspection of the court records by the defence revealed that certain transactions of the court did not feature in these. The prosecution and the defence proposed today that they jointly sign the record of the proceedings at the end of the day, but the court did not agree to it. The court has also decided to hold the proceedings in-camera. The sources said formations in the chain of command had no intimation about such a move by the court. Neither had the convening authority ordered proceedings to be held in-camera, nor did such a request emanate from the defence or the prosecution. The sources add that the complainant woman officer, in her deposition before the court, has raised some fresh allegations against the accused. The defence had objected to this on the grounds that the accused had been arraigned on two charges and allegations which were not raised in the court of inquiry and summary of evidence cannot be brought up at this stage. |
