Mandeep enters semis

The AITA Super Series Tennis Tournament spotted its semi-finalists in the boys’ and girls’ under-14 and under-16 sections at the CLTA courts, Sector 10, here today.

Mandeep Gill, Rohit Bisht, Saurabh Singh and Bharat Bhardwaj are the semi-finalists in the under-16 category.

The lone hope of the city, third seed Mandeep Singh Gill, thrashed Maninder Singh from Haryana in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 in the singles’ quarterfinal match of the under-16 category.

The CLTA product dominated the proceedings from the word ‘go’. Riding high on powerful serves and volleys, Mandeep gave no chance to his opponent during the match. Mandeep lost only one game in each set to secure his berth in the semifinals.

Saurabh Singh and Bharat Bhardwaj beat K. Pradeep Reddy and Akshat Joshi from Chandigarh, respectively, to move into the semifinals.

Though Saurabh was given a tough time by seventh seed K. Pradeep Reddy of Andhra Pradesh but holding his nerves, he managed to win 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.

For Bharat Bhardwaj, beating local player Akshat Joshi was not a big deal. Controlling the proceedings throughout the match, Bharat won in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.

Mandeep will take on top seed Rohit Bisht, who beat Surya Pawan of Andhra Pradesh in three sets 6-1, 7-6 (2), 6-0.

The second semi-final will be an all-qualifiers affair as Saurabh Singh of Delhi will face Bharat Bhardwaj of Haryana tomorrow.

In the under-14 category, Digvijay Singh Mehta from Himachal Pradesh, the brother duo Ronit and Rohit Bisht from Delhi and K. Pradeep Reddy from AP will meet in the semifinals.

Fourth seed Digvijay Singh Mehta got the better of eighth seed Vishal Passi of Maharashtra 6-1, 6-1 whereas second seed Ronit Bisht of Delhi outclassed seventh seed Vinod Gowda of Haryana 6-2, 6-1. Now, Digvijay will face Ronit in the semifinals.

In the other quarterfinal match, top seed Rohit Bisht defeated Sidharath Rawat of Uttar Pradesh 7-5, 6-2. Rohit will face fifth seed K. Pradeep Reddy (AP) in the semi-finals. Reddy ended the challenge of third seed Surya Pawan (AP) 6-4, 6-2.

In girls’ category, top seed Garima Vatwani (Delhi), Seeulee Upadhaya (Orissa), second seed Shweta C. Rana (Delhi) and Vaidehi Bhagwat will be seen in action in the semi-finals.

Top seed Shweta C. Rana (Delhi) beat Kritika Paul (Delhi) 6-2, 6-4 while fifth seed Prathana Tombera (Maharashtra) ousted fourth seed Vaniya Dangwal from Delhi 7-6 (2), 6-4.

In other quarterfinal matches, second seed Vaidehi Bhagwat from Maharashtra faced a tough challenge from eighth seed Manya Nagpal from Delhi before emerging victor in the quarterfinal match in the girls’ under-14 singles category. Vaidehi won 7-6 (8), 6-7 (6), 6-2.

The semifinal line-up is: Garima Vatwani vs Seeulee Upadhaya; Vaidehi Bhagwat (Mah) vs Shweta C. Rana.

Chandigarh enter semis

Chandigarh, June 6
Chandigarh entered the semifinals after beating Poorvanchal by 68 runs in the All-India Thirty Overs Cricket Tournament being held at Hoshiarpur.

Chandigarh captain Girish Bhanot won the toss and elected to bat. Raghav Sharma (43) and Vikramjit Singh Saini (28) made a solid start by putting on 83 runs in nine overs. At this stage, Poorvanchal’s Saddam bowled well to claim four wickets. Chandigarh made 171 all out in 26.4 overs.

Poorvanchal replied with 103 all out in 21.4 overs. Anil Kumar (24) and Aman opened the Poorvanchal innings. Aman was out with scorecard reading 19. Chandigarh medium pacer Sonu claimed four wickets for 19 runs. Girish Bhanot and Gurpreet Singh got three wickets each for 9 and 18 runs, respectively. — TNS

Vivek High beat Shemrock

Chandigarh, June 6
Vivek High Asian Cricket Academy thrashed Shemrock Cricket School Academy by 8 wickets in the second match of Hot Weather Twenty20 Cricket Cup at Vivek High School, Sector 38, here, today.

Batting first, Shemrock accumulated 74 all out in 14.2 overs. Arjun Singla wrecked the batting lineup, finishing 4 for 6, followed by Anek Brar, who snapped 2 for 8. Vivek team achieved the target in just 6.5 overs, losing two wickets. Paras Bajaj made 31 runs while Anek Brar remained unbeaten on 23.

Subeer shines in MCA win

Mohali, June 6
Masterly knock by Subeer Hayer (58 off 47 balls) and a five-wicket haul by right-arm leg spinner Jasinder (5 for 17) enabled Mohali Cricket Academy (MCA) to defeat Ropar Cricket Academy (RCA) by 57 runs in a league match of the triangular cricket tournament played at MCA ground, Mohali, here, today.

Batting first after winning the toss, MCA scored 209 runs in the stipulated 35 overs for the loss of just 3 wickets.

Starting in a swashbuckling manner, Subeer Hayer hit five consecutive boundaries on the first five balls. He made 58 runs in 47 balls with 12 boundaries.

Subeer was ably supported by Shine, who hit unbeaten 37 off 31 balls. Mayank Munjal contributed 35 not out in 54 balls.

For Ropar, Abhishek and Maninder took one wicket each for 21 and 25 runs, respectively.

In reply, Ropar also started aggressively, hitting 75 runs in first 10 overs.

Playing bold knocks, Maninder made 44 runs in just 36 balls while Piyush put on 31 off 41 balls. After their dismissal, the whole batting lineup surrendered meekly to the guile of Jasinder, who claimed 5 wickets for just 17 runs. RCA team was bundled out for 152 runs.

Brief scores: MCA: 209 for 3 in 35 overs (Subeer Hayer 58, Shine 37 n.o., Mayank Munjal 35 n.o., Abhishek 1 for 21, Maninder 1 for 25); RCA: 152 all out in 28. overs (Maninder 44, Piyush 31, Jasinder 5 for 17).

Lilly blossoms

Chandigarh, June 6
International player Dharmendra Lilly won the top honours in the Asia Billiards 9 Ball Pool Open Prize Money Tournament beating Rajat Khaneja 11-6 at Asia Billiards, Sector 34, today.

Showing excellent skills of potting and cue ball control, Lilly gave a tough time to his opponent. Rajat, too, put up a brave resistance, he could not match his Lilly’s experience.

Earlier, Lilly crushed Gagan Makkar 9-3 in the semifinals whereas Rajat Khaneja upset Smit Talwar 9-4 to enter the finals.

K.K. Attri, director general of police, Punjab (home gaurds), was the chief guest who gave away the prizes to the winners.
