BKU for direct payment to farmers
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, June 6
Members of the Bharitya Kisan Union (BKU) and commission agents (arhtiyas) seem to be at loggerheads over the issue of payment to the farmers for their produce. While the BKU favours a direct payment to the farmers, the arhtiyas want it to be routed through them. Recently the Punjab Mandi Board had passed a unanimous resolution to this effect, which is being opposed by the commission agents.

BKU president Ajmer Singh Lakhowal said here today that it was in the best interests of the farmers that they received the direct payment for their produce. “Why do you need the middlemen when the farmers can get the payment for their produce directly?” he asked, while insisting that the Punjab government must not bow out to the pressure of the agents.

The commission agents are learnt to have launched a signature campaign against this move across the villages since it would certainly end their monopoly over the trading of the crops. They are moving from village to village seeking signatures of the farmers opposing the move.

To this Lakhowal remarked, “Most of the farmers are always indebted to the arhtiyas so it is no big deal to get signatures from farmers in their (the artiyas’) support”.

Good response to PCTE : As many as 2,773 students from all over the country have opted for PCTE to get admission in PCTE’s management quota of 34 seats. The students applied through MAT (Management Aptitude Test).

PCTE is among the few colleges in the country to float its management quota seats for MAT applicants. While 80 seats are filled through MET, the entrance test conducted by Guru Nanak Dev University, the rest of the management quota seats are usually filled by the colleges themselves.

On the other hand, PCTE admits students for these management quota seats through MAT, organised by the All-India Management Association, New Delhi, every year. PCTE further conducts GD and interview before admitting students.

Dr K.N.S. Kang, director of PCTE, in a press statement said the college also had foreign students studying at its campus from six different countries, besides having students from all over the country.

He said the response perhaps was due to the fact that PCTE had been ranked 36th by ‘Outlook’ magazine in 2006, and the best B-school by three different surveys (AIMA, Business India and Outlook) in the last three years in the three states of J&K, Punjab, and HP.

Dr Kang informed that in this year’s MAT test about 2,773 students opted for 34 seats nation-wide, of which only 1,157 have been called for GD and interview. Of those who have been called, 327 students have got 90 percentile and above score in MAT. He said this was an encouraging response for education in Punjab as a whole.

City Centre Scam
Chetan’s bail plea hearing adjourned again
Our Legal Correspondent

Ludhiana, June 6
The hearing on the bail application filed by Chetan Gupta, a Delhi-based businessman, was today adjourned, as the Vigilance Bureau again failed to produce the case file before
the court.

Special Judge Gurbir Singh adjourned the hearing for June 9. Chetan was arrested in connection with City Centre Scam on
May 17.

Accused Chetan had filed the bail application on May 25. Taking cognizance of his bail plea, the Special Judge had fixed June 2 for hearing. But the Vigilance Bureau could not produce the record. Then the hearing was postponed for June 6. Failure of prosecution to produce the case file irked the defence lawyers and they lodged their protest with the court.

Meanwhile, MD of IPE company Ashwajit Singh has moved application seeking permission to go abroad from June 7 to 17. He was granted anticipatory bail by the Special Judge on
April 26.

He pleaded that IPE company has been short-listed for an Asian Development Bank-funded project in the Republic of Palau. So, he wanted to visit there for holding meetings in connection with the project. He also had to visit Manila to discuss the same with the officials of the Asian Development Bank.

However, the Special Public Prosecutors Mitter Sain Goyal (District Attorney) and M L Solanki opposed the grant of permission to go abroad. If permitted to go abroad, they said there was every possibility that accused may flee and thus abscond from the court of law, which would hamper the ongoing case, added Special Public Prosecutors.

After hearing the rival contentions, the Judge reserved the order for tomorrow.
