Innovative surgery saves drug addict’s life
Ludhiana, June 6 Belonging to a rich family, Gurmail had taken to drugs because of the availability of easy money. “Both my sisters and my younger brother are settled abroad, and I never felt the need to work in life. Bad company and plenty of money made me a drug addict. Over the period, things reached such a point that no artery in my body remained without syringe marks,” he disclosed. According to Dr G.S. Wander, chief cardiologist and coordinator at HDHI, a couple of days back, the main artery in Gurmail’s thigh had burst open when he was taking a bath. “The victim would have bled to death, but fortunately his family members immediately shifted him to the hospital. When we examined him in the emergency, our first priority was to stop the heavy bleeding from near his groin area. The task was handed over to our team of surgeons comprising Dr V.K. Sharma, Dr Sarju Ralhan, Dr Rajeev Gupta, Dr Sameer Goel and Dr. Paresh Shah.” Dr Ralhan, giving more details, said that the surgical team had to perform an extremely complicated and sensitive operation called “Obturator Bypass” to stop the excessive bleeding. “Our task was made more difficult by the fact that the chances of the patient developing an infection were very high.” Most of the arteries of this patient were badly damaged because of drug abuse and the surgeons literally had to make a search for the proper artery for repairing the bleeding thigh artery. The team carried out some extremely complex surgical procedures and finally managed to repair the burst artery after an operation lasting about three hours, added Dr Ralhan. Gurmail has since been discharged and recovery has been uneventful. On one of the follow-up visits to the hospital here today, he expressed his determination to live a healthyand drug-free life. |
