Hassan, Farheen carrom champs

In the rarest of the rare occurrence, four siblings battled it out in the finals of both boys and girls singles categories of the 17th edition of the Chandigarh State Carrom Championship for sub-junior boys and girls at St Stephen’s School, Sector 45 here.

In the boys’ category, Hassan beat his brother Shaquib in two straight games 25-12, 25-22, while in the girls’ category, Farheen defeated her sister Tuba 18-05, 25-05 to lift respective trophies.

In all, 32 players, including nine girls, participated in the tournament, which saw 32 matches.

The four position holders in each event were awarded ranking points for their selection to the national/zonal championships.

The results: Boys’ singles (sub-junior): Round 1: Yashu Sharma b Tanmay Sinha 25-00; Md. Aarish b Umang Kumar Sinha 25-00; Anmol Kuthiala b Prabhjot Singh 24-04; Tassavar Ali b Nawaz 25-07; Mukul Dev Sharma b Ayush Hemdan 22-08; Kartik b Inamul Haque 25-10; Ankush Taneja b Sahil Mohd. 20-15.

Round 2: Hassan b Harlove 25-0; Sudhanshu Narwal b Yashu Sharma 21-14; Md. Arif b Prabhnoor 25-00; Md. Aarish b Anmol Kuthiala 25-00; Md. Saquib b Tassavar Ali 20-15; Mukul Dev Sharma b Najaf 17-16,Kartik b Aman Taneja 25-00; Md. Talib b Ankush Taneja 25-04.

Girls’ singles: quarter-final: Farheen b Khushnuma 25-00; Amanjot b Joshika Gupta 25-00; Anjali Taneja b Parika Gupta 25-00, Tuba b Gulshan 23-12.

Semifinal: Farheen b Amanjot 25-00, 25-00; Tuba b Anjali Taneja 19-16, 25-12.

Final: Farheen b Tuba 18-05, 25-05.

Friendship Cup
Shivam champions Vivek win

An all-round performance by Shivam Bhambri helped Vivek High Asian Cricket Academy to beat Achievers Cricket Academy by 171 runs in the second match of the Friendship Cup 2007. The tournament is being organised by the Twenty20 Cricket Federation of India at Vivek High School, Sector 38-B.

Vivek academy won the toss and elected to bat first. They scored 274 runs for 5 in 30 overs. Manik Khanna scored 62 runs while Pranav and Suryansh contributed unbeaten 41 and 33 runs, respectively.

Chasing the target, Achievers academy was bowled out for 103 runs in 27.3 overs. Apart from Shivam Bhambri, Arjun and Mehr Pratap, too, proved destroyers for the Achievers’ squad.

Shivam Bhambri bagged the man of the match award.

Brief scores: Vivek High Asian Cricket Academy: 274 for 5 in alloted 30 overs (Shivam Bhambri 78, Manik Khanna 62, Jeevitesh 38, Pranav Khanna 41)

Achievers Cricket Academy (Delhi): 103 all out in 27.3 overs (Manik Mehta 33, Adarsh 22, Harshit 16, Shivam Bhambri 4 for 16, Arjun Singla 3 for 23).

Tennis
Shailender registers win

Chandigarh, June 9
Shailender Rathore of Chandigarh and Ankush Arora of Punjab registered hard-fought wins in the first round of u-16 and u-12 boys singles qualifying matches, respectively, in the AITA Talent Series Tennis Tournament. The tournament is being organised at the Sector 10 CLTA stadium here.

Both pipped their respective rivals in tie-breaker sessions. Shailender Rathore defeated Ashutosh Sharma (Chandigarh) 9-2 while Ankush Arora edged out Tarun Nama (Delhi) 9-4. Utkarsh Khosla of Chandigarh put up a stiff resistance before going down to Pranav Malhotra of Delhi by 5-9. — TNS
