  NIMA holds diabetes check-up camp

Ludhiana, June 10
The National Integrated Medical Association (NIMA) organised the 30th free diabetes detection and treatment camp under its community service programme at Kehal Ayurvedic Centre in Mullanpur today.

A team of NIMA doctors, which included Dr Rajesh Thapar and Dr Surendra Gupta, examined around 150 patients and distributed free medicines to them. Free blood sugar tests were performed on 70 persons, out of which 28 were found to be suffering from diabetes.

Those attending the camp were told that ayurvedic formulations were quite effective in fighting diseases like diabetes, erratic digestion, and urinary tract infections. They were also told that sufficient physical activity could prevent many chronic and incurable diseases.

Dr Rajesh Thapar extended a welcome to ayurvedic medical officer, Mullanpur, Dr Hari Singh Khatra, who supervised the camp.

Cricket Tournament
Comprehensive victory for Mahajan XI

Ludhiana, June 10
In the inaugural match of the 11th Chaman Lal Malhotra Cricket Tournament (under 14) being organised by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association at the Arya College ground here today, Mahajan XI scored a comprehensive 110-run victory over Pankaj Club.

Batting first, Mahajan XI hoisted a big total of 189 runs for the loss of five wickets in the stipulated 25 overs.

After losing an early wicket (Dipin Chitkara for 2), Parul and Chirag Maria steadied the innings and refused to give any more wickets to the bowlers of Pankaj Club.

Parul, student of class 7 of Jain Public School, Benjamin Road, played a patient innings of 35 runs including five hits to the fence. Chirag, an 8th class student of Kundan Vidya Mandir School faced 52 balls and remained unbeaten on 56. Besides that, Sahil Sood of Sacred Heart Convent School, Chandigarh road, scored a quick 37 off 36 deliveries.

For Pankaj Club, Abhishek of DAV Public School chipped in with three wickets for 24 runs in his quota of five overs. Suraj of RS Model Senior Secondary School and Sumer of DAV School claimed one wicket each. Ricky, a 12-year-old lad of DAV School, Sarabha Nagar, impressed with his excellent fielding and quick reflexes.

In reply to the big total of Mahajan XI, Pankaj Club, after a cautious start, could muster only 79 runs in 12.3 overs.

They were cruising well till the 9th over (47 for 4), however, the middle order let them down thereafter. Only three batsmen - Suraj (22), Shubham (12) and Sumil (12) could reach double-figures. Abhishek remained not out at 8.

Chirag Maria sent down four overs and gave away 21 runs for his two wicket haul. Mankaran Singh of Sacred Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar, grabbed two wickets for 21 runs in two overs while Nikhil of Kundan Vidya Mandir School captured 2 wickets for two runs. An upcoming player, Dipin Chitkara, a student of class 3 of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, scalped two victims for six runs in just one and half over.

Sahil Sood claimed one wicket without giving any run while Rohit took one for 15.

Earlier, Manpreet Singh Ayali, senior vice president, youth wing of Shiromani Akali Dal inaugurated the week-long tournament in which four teams are participating. Chaman Lal Malhotra, chairman, selection committee, Punjab (seniors) and senior vice president, Ludhiana District Cricket Association, Charanjit Singh, district sports officer, Moga, office bearers of the organising association and parents of the players were among those present during the inaugural ceremony.
