Ludhiana, June 10
The Ludhiana urban police today arrested B.I.S. Chahal, the high-profile ex-media adviser to Capt Amarinder Singh, along with four other relatives, in a seven-month-old alleged land-grab case today.

It was a day of hectic activity at the vigilance office where Chahal, Raninder Singh and Raminder Singh, son and son-in-law of Amarinder, respectively, were quizzed by the vigilance officials in the City Centre scam. The drama centred around Chahal in the evening. Member of Parliament Preneet Kaur was also present outside the Vigilance office all day.

Harish Kumar, SP(City-I), said Chahal and six of his relatives, belonging to Daad village, have been booked under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 452 (house trespass, having made preparation for causing hurt, assault), 379 (theft), 148 (rioting), 149 (member of an unlawful assembly) on the complaint of Harchand Singh of Daad village.

Though the complainant had filed a complaint with the Ludhiana police on October 23, alleging Chahal and others forcibly took possession of two stretches of land measuring 3 acres and about 2 acres, worth over 15 crore, and fired at him, the case was registered today.

A team led by SP (City-I) arrested Chahal at 5.30 pm from the Vigilance Bureau office, where he was being questioned. Chahal was on bail in the scam case. Chahal had reached the vigilance office at 3 pm to join investigation.

Along with him, the police arrested Jagdish Singh, whose daughter is married to Chahal’s son. Jagdish’s father Kartar Singh Grewal, ex-sarpanch of Daad village, and other relatives Harbhajan Singh and Harjinder Singh have alse been arrested.

While Kartar was reportedly arrested from his house, others were whisked away from outside the vigilance office where they were waiting for Chahal to come out.

The police officials had a hot argument with the lawyers of the ex-media adviser regarding the bail granted to him by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The police reasoned that Chahal could be booked and arrested in this case.

The SP said the accused had allegedly threatened the complainant on phone on June 3 after which he had lodged another complaint with the police.

Two of his relatives, Japinder Singh and Iqbal Singh, who also belong to the Daad village, were absconding, the police added.
