Chandigarh, June 11 In the under-12 boys’ singles category, Amit Bzad from Punjab upset Vishu Prasad in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Local players, top seed Nischay Rawal and seventh seed Srijan Uppal, got the better of Akhil Bansal of Punjab (6-0, 6-4) and Sartak Das (6-0, 6-0), respectively. Srijan Uppal did not drop even a single game against Sartak Das. But Inderbir Singh Bains from Chandigarh was not so lucky, as he lost to sixth seed Sheetij Chillar of Delhi in a well-contested match. The final score was 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 (9). In the boys’ under-16 category, qualifier Nischay Rawal from Chandigarh stunned fourth seed Rishabh Arora of Delhi in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 to move to the second round. The other players who defeated their rivals to move ahead were top seed Samar Adhikari (Maharashtra) and second seed Sidhant Solanki (Delhi). Black Elephant lift hot weather trophy
Patiala, June 11 Black Elephant Cricket Club elected to bat first after winning the toss. The second wicket stand of 118 runs stood them in good stead as the team mustered 232 runs for 7 wickets in 45 overs. Anmolpreet Singh made 80 runs in an innings studded with 10 fours, while Prabhjot Singh hammered 65 runs. Sukhwinder Singh hit 21 runs in the last five overs. In reply, New Gymkhana XI were bowled out for 98 in 35.2 overs. Manpreet Singh showed some resistance scoring 21 runs, while the rest of the wickets fell cheaply. Black Elephant’s Sukhwinder Singh and Kanwar Pal Singh wrecked the opponent’s innings. Sukhwinder took four for seven, while Kanwar Pal Singh scalped three for 21 runs. Col Sandeep Malik, Commandant of 13 Armed Regiment, and R.P. Pandove, PCA secretary, distributed prizes among players. Three surfaces at tennis academy

Chandigarh, June 11 Giving details about the facilities at the academy, director of the Chandigarh sports department I.S. Sandhu said, “At present there are eight courts - four synthetic and four clay, but by the end of this month four grass courts will also be ready to facilitate the tennis lovers here. The work of installing floodlights and sprinkler system will also be completed by July-end.” “The playing style of every tennis player varies according to his/her capabilities. Some play fast game while others depend on retrieving game. Grass courts suit to the fast players, who mainly depend on serves and volleys, but those who prefer to play shots from baseline are players of clay courts. So, having all types of courts is an extra advantage for trainees,” said chief coach of the academy Lalit Tandon, who joined the academy in April this year. Over 60 youngsters between the age of six and 17 have been getting training under the supervision of Tandon and Ajay Kaushik here. “Out of these, many promising players, including Harmeek Singh, Chavri Saxena, Ayna Arora, Samin Bhargav, Jaywardhan Guptaand Karamvir Singh, have been doing very well and definitely we will start producing results within six months,” said Tandon. “We are targeting around 200 players at the academy. Very soon, more coaches and physical trainers will be appointed to provide adequate attention to each and every trainee,” said Sandhu. To sharpen the proficiency of the players, the authorities have also placed an order for a bowling machine. |

Edmund Rice academy clinch opener
Chandigarh, June 11 In the second match, played between United Delhi Cricket Academy, Delhi, and LIC juniors, the former won by two runs. Bating first, Edmund academy scored 149 runs in the allotted 25 overs. The top scorer for the team was Amandeep Sahota, who made 31 runs. Balwinder Singh (27) and Shivam Bhambri (26) were the other contributors. For Bharat academy, Paras took 3 for 29 runs, followed by Mohit, who claimed two for 14. In reply, Bharat academy were bowled out for 79 runs in 18.5 overs. Abhinandon Wason wrecked the opponent’s batting lineup, snapping four wickets for just seven runs. He was declared man of the match. In the second match, United academy set a target of 90 runs, as the team were bowled out for 89 in 23.5 overs. In reply, LIC fell short of two runs, as they could manage 87 runs in 24.2 overs. Jayesh Kalra of United academy, who took 3 for 9, was declared man of the match. Panchkula, June 11 Former Indian player Bhupinder Singh Senior along with former Ranji/Duleep Trophy players from Punjab Bharti Vij and Arun Sharma will impart training to cricketers. “Bhupinder Singh will provide tips to fast bowlers, while Arun Sharma will look after the wicketkeeping aspects,” said Bharti Vij, highest wicket-taker for Punjab in Ranji Trophy and a level 2 BCCI coach. |
