British diplomat for Indo-UK projects

Ludhiana, June 15
Sir Michael Arthur, British High Commissioner in India, appreciated Punjab Agricultural University for its international achievements in agricultural research during a high level meeting with Dr M.S. Kang, vice-chancellor of PAU here today.

He said the university had not only made Punjab self-reliant in food grain production but had also brought about a green revolution in the country.

He felt that India and UK could jointly work on research and development projects in which PAU, being capable of exploring research possibilities, could play a pivotal role.

Lauding the hard working farmers of Punjab, Sir Arthur said the role of PAU in agricultural progress was well recognised and that was one reason to include this institution in his tour itinerary.

Punjab and UK enjoyed a close relationship and the presence of a large Punjabi population in the UK was proof enough.

The need was to strengthen this relationship through joint projects by institutions of higher learning, he added. He also assured to suggest the UK government for enhancement in Common Wealth Scholarship.

Dr M.S. Kang elaborated on the stellar role played by PAU in teaching, research and extension services. The university plans to collaborate with international institutions and scientists more often.

Dwelling on the state of agriculture in Punjab, Dr Kang said that despite having a small geographical area, Punjab had seen an exponential growth in the production of wheat, rice and honey.

Dr B.S. Dhillon, director of research, also spoke on the occasion. He highlighted the newly developed varieties by the university and its various research projects.

Dr V.K. Sharma, registrar, Dr N.S. Malhi, director of extension education, Dr G.S. Chahal, dean, College of Agriculture, Dr V.R. Sharma, dean, College of Agricultural Engineering and Dr J.K. Sangha, dean, College of Home Science were also present.

Dr Kang honoured the British diplomat with phulkari and a set of farm literature. D.J. Rao, financial advisor of the British High Commission and Tanisha Thiara, trade and development adviser at the Commission also graced the occasion.

SIFT students display creations

The ‘final product’ of the Sportking Institute of Fashion Technology (SIFT) is finally out in the market.

After completing training in knitwear design technology, fourth semester students of knitwear design is preparing to test the real waters of the knitwear designing in the industry.

The students of Knitwear Design, forth semester, presented their end term garments to the industrialists at an exhibition here today which had been made under flat knitted design, CAD and surface ornamentation module.

According to the course tutors Abhishek Bajaj, Dilshad Kaur and Nirbhay Kumar, all garments were made by the students, using Mi-Software of STOLL machines in 7 guage. All students were given a mood board as an inspiration for all their work.

The garments have techniques like jacquard, intarsia, pointelle, blind-off, press-off technique, application with lxi pick up, partial knitting, needle holding techniques, and various other interesting new structures. The students also presented fully fashioned garments in jacquard structure.

Language lab opens in Narangwal college

Pritpal Singh Grewal, chairman, Patna Sahib Trust, GN Nanak College, Narangwal, today inaugurated the language lab at the college.

Speaking on the occasion, he emphasised the need of affordable and the best education for the rural students of the area.

Jagpal Singh Khangura, president of the managing committee, who was also present on the occasion, congratulated the management, principal, staff and students of the college and emphasised the need for upliftment of education in rural masses.

Manmohan Singh Narangwal, joint secretary of the management committee gave the brief history and present the achievements of the college.

H.S.Gosal, principal, said it was the first language lab in any of the rural college in Punjab. The lab was fully equipped with modern technology and help the rural students for coaching of IELTS, at very subsidised rates.

He disclosed that the college was also going to start courses in fashion designing, vermiculture and agriculture based waste management. These courses are helpful for the students of this area. The college is going to start I BCA course from this year.

100 pc result for Aurobindo college

Ludhiana, June 15
Sri Aurobindo College of Commerce and Management has scored 100 % results in B.Com final year. 91% students have secured first division.

The college was established in the year 2004 as a centre of excellence in commerce and management education.

The college authorities said this is the first batch to have passed out of the college. The results of the first batch match the results of some of the premier colleges affiliated to Panjab University.

The authorities claimed good quality education, advanced learning culture, continuous teaching and a committed faculty of the college were the striking factors behind the excellent performance by the first passing out batch.

Simrat Sethi stood first in the college with 81.34% marks in B.Com third year.

In B.Com second year, the pass percentage was 99 with Khushboo Ahuja securing the first position with 77.8% marks. In B.Com first year, the college recorded 99.3% result with 70% students scoring high first division. Neha Agarwal stood first in the college with 81.3% marks and 14 other students scored distinctions in B.Com first year.

“The rigorous course curriculum of the college has helped the students to not only produce excellent results in university examinations but also develop a strong personality to face the challenging corporate environment in the future”, said Prem Kumar, principal of the college.

Shakti school students bag top positions

Machhiwara, June 15
The students of Shakti Public Senior Seconday School, Machhiwara, proved their supremacy over all the other students of Samrala, Khanna and other towns and villages falling under Ludhiana district by capturing top positions in the list of meritorious students of class 10 which was released by the Punjab School Education Board, Mohali, on Wednesday.

Navjot Kaur stood 25th in Punjab with 580 marks out of 650 while Navpreet Deep Aman secured 27th rank by securing 578 marks.

Navjot Kaur had already proved her mettle by bagging the top position in Khanna and Samrala tehsils in the middle class examination, in the year 2005.

Talking to media persons here, Navjot Kaur and Navpreet Deep Aman attributed their success to their teachers and parents.

On the occasion, Bhupinder Kapoor, manager of the school, congratulated the students and teachers for their brilliant performance.

Bail for juvenile

Ludhiana, June 15
Chief judicial magistrate-cum-principal magistrate, Juvenile Justice Board, Rajinder Aggarwal, today granted bail to Iqbal Singh, one of the accused in a much-talked about attempt to murder and land grabbing case involving B.I.S. Chahal.

The judge granted bail to Iqbal Singh as he was found to be juvenile. Nothing was recovered from his possession. The judge ordered to release him on furnishing surety bonds to the tune of Rs 30,000.

The court had taken an undertaking from Kuldeep Kaur, mother of the accused, that she would take care of the juvenile.

Iqbal Singh said he was innocent. He alleged that due to political vendetta, their entire family was implicated in this case.
