Hirsutism on rise among women
The symptoms of the disease include growth of long and coarse hair on male pattern in women. Besides being cosmetically distressing, it may indicate hormonal imbalance. Apart from cosmetic disfigurement, masculinity symptoms start appearing in case the disease is not cured at an early stage. Abnormally high androgen levels can cause hirsutism. Hair follicles being more sensitive than usual to normal androgen levels is another reason behind the disease. Therefore, increased hair growth in affected persons often is observed with endocrine disorders, informed Dr Sharma. Genetic causes are also found behind the disease. If the mother, grandmother or sister experiences the disorder, then a woman is at a greater risk of developing it. Nowadays, the laser cosmetic technique has come handy for the patients of hirsutism, claimed Dr Sharma. Various types of lasers are used for different cosmetic and dermatological problems. The consolation now is that these laser treatments are affordable and approachable in India. Since the cost of skin surgeries as well as treatment with laser is very costly abroad, the patients from abroad especially NRIs are approaching India, thus increasing medical tourism, said the dermatologist. It costs between Rs 1500 and Rs 3000 per session and one needs four to six sessions for the treatment. But one should not get over-excited, seeing the advantages of lasers, and other newer therapies, cautions the doctor. The treating physician or surgeon should be aware of the conditions in which a patient cannot have laser therapy. The laser in the hands of an inexperienced unqualified person can prove disastrous. |
